I did the Canada to Us commute for 2 years. If you can get an airline that will authorize you to jumpseat on your own metal in the cockpit, that would save you a lot of trouble. I believe you would have no competition for the jumpseat, so basically a confirmed seat every time.
There are taxes associated to jumpseating international, roughly 75$ CAD, only when travelling TO the United States. You also have to deal with the lack of knowledge from the gate and ticket agent, most of them don’t know how to list you.
I’ve done the Atlas jumpseat and that was great and free, I believe UPS and Fedex would also be free.
