Korean pilots demand pay raise, or they may go to China - CNN.com

KAL is losing both captains and F/O's to the expat pilots market..., not only to China, they are going to Japan, Vietnam and other places....., the rumor mill at KAL is that all the demands will be met to try to stop the bleeding because it is hurting them.

I love this little gem of a quote "A 37% increase would be equivalent to $41,000 -- which is around the average salary of a normal employee in Korea and the request is unacceptable.".

This isn't an "average" job with average skill sets. If it was, they wouldn't need expats there to do it. They would just have the locals fly for them. Time to pay up or send cadet "We Tu Lo" of to flight training for $100k. Good luck operating your airline while it takes another 1 1/2 years to get a cadet trained, typed and line trained. It will be faster and cheaper to just shut up and pay the market rate for pilots.

Hard to feel sorry for Korean Air. I know several very well qualified applicants they have refused to even interview for unknown reasons. You cannot refuse to grant interviews to qualified candidates then complain about not having enough pilots.

Years ago there were a couple nightmare post by non-Koreans over on PPrune in regards to training and cockpit life.

Maybe their training department will lighten up.

If threatening to leave for China doesn't work, the pilots should announce that they will begin hand-flying visual approaches.
The company will cave at once.

The recent contract from Rishworth had a pay cut. Also there are a lot of us out here who would go but CCL and Rishworth aren't very good.

Ummmm… Oh.... $140,000 is a LOT for someone living in Korea. As far as I know $30,000/year is the average pay in the whole country. Hire new pilots and fire all those greedy ...

$30,000 might be the average on some survey but there is a large upper middle class or upper class population there. It would be hard to live on $30,000 there, everything is so expensive, from food to utilities. I bought one of my translators a pair of Levis, he politely told me he didn't want them, I asked why, he said they don't cost enough. His daily jeans cost $300, I asked how many pairs do you have, he said 7.

There seems to be many well off people there and many not so well off. I lived there for 2 years.

Actually it does look like $30,000 is about average, wow, my rent was at least $1500 a month.
