There is value there for sure. But you can’t pay your bills or your mortgage with home basing. 80% of pilots in my base commute, and none of them stress hard about it. They all would rather live in base but they commute 3 times a month and still have 16 days off a month.

The flexibility to move almost anywhere is great and if that’s what you place high value on, NetJets is a good option.

Commuting 3 times a month is not the norm. Even if was, 3 times a month is 6 times a month right? Got to get there, then back.

If your goal is to be the richest guy in the graveyard, go head, get a big mortgage and commute. Just not everyone's cup of tea, that's all.

working 7 straight days with the pace and schedule of netjets is a lot more draining than commuting and flying 121 - just look at the fatigue numbers.

Depends on the fleet and the tour, though I have to admit incredibly the least fatiguing job I have had was flying the 747-400 for Connie, we double crewed mostly everywhere, which translated to 4-6 hours in the seat at a time, then a break in a first class/biz class seat , or a bunk, then laying over 24-48 hours between legs , anyway I digress, in the XL as of late , with the Latitude, and 350 becoming the hot new, go to fleets ,life has been getting better on the sky road , this last 7 day binge whereupon we ranged from San Jose, SLC, Jackson Hole, East Hampton , and a few stops in between , we averaged 3 legs a day, one 4 leg day, one min rest night, one 15 hour overnight, 1 ship change, it was a good tour , and they sent me home a day early , GOD BLESS 'em : ) of course YMMV, I'm staying on the mighty XL till displacement occurs , life in this fleet is slowly,but surely, improving. I had tours that were memorably good in the Phenom relatively speaking, but the worst part about NetJets is that nothing is predictable. Next tour you could easily get strung along a trail of crap with multiple airlines to broken airplanes, multiple min rest overnights, 5 legs a day, multiple asap recoveries, and terrible short layovers. For me, worrying about if the next tour was going to be hell or not was the terrible for moral, as I think it is for lots of pilots here.

A note about fatigue calls, next time ours get released I will mention them here but I asked our SFO chief pilot how many F bombs he got, and he said he got a handful a month. Last I remember, NetJets averages 19 a day I think? I have been tired here, I have been delayed and and flown super late night and I have flown a couple of red eyes. I have been tired for sure, but I haven't felt fatigued to where I couldn't pull it off. And I haven't even come close to the feeling of being totally drained, and emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted at the end of a trip here, like I did most of the time at NetJets. That is a the model though, the motto is push until pilots break, so when you come to that realization, you just fatigue as necessary and you tell scheduling what you need. There were pilots who were really good at that, and it made for really good QOL on a 7 day trip. Then there were those that thought the company would fire them if they didn't fly exhausted.

Not a problem by and large on the XL fleet if we are fatigued we fatigue , of course YMMV may vary per tour, but just speaking from my own wee corner of an aging fleet ,life on the sky road is definitely, if incrementally , getting better , of course I'm only speaking from my own experience.

All the airlines have commuter protection, if modern day commuting to a major airline was as bad as every NetJets pilot assumes it is because they flew for a crappy commuter 15 years ago, then everyone would be flocking for home based jobs, and spoiler alert, they aren’t. Hell a buddy on the 75/76 at United lives in BFE Tennessee and commutes to IAD to fly to Ireland twice a month. It’s nothing for him to do that.

It isn’t about being the richest pilot to the graveyard, it’s about working an easier job for more money. If flying rich people for 2/3 the pay of an airline pilot gets your rocks off, that’s the place for you. I have 2 kids, a house, and I want to have a good retirement. I also want to set my kids up financially. If those are your goals, you can do it easier at an airline than you can at a NetJets for those making the decision to go airline or NetJets.
