Actually the accurate year 2 of contract, 7 year SIC is making a hair above $84,000 (but keep in mind that the 7 year SIC will probably never, ever see the left seat and will thus be pay capped in this contract too. I'm about to enter year 13 in the right seat).
I assume that $7800 is perdiem? If you want to eat anywhere near healthy, you'll spend about 50% of that on the road.
I'm not here to defend or damn NJA, but your figures are off.

Well he is adding the cost of medical insurance from another company, to the salary to show the monetary value. The arguement is really invalid as it shouldn't be shown as part of the pay. It's a huge benefit to not have to pay for healthcare but it should never be used to compare pay. It especially isn't a reason to under pay pilots.

There is a back and forth comparison of benefits from company to company and not having to pay for healthcare might be a benefit big enough for somebody to take lower pay and that's fine.

That's not what I was doing. I was trying to get an estimation of what your gross pay will be next year at your current employer based on statements you made.

YOU said that even with the medical insurance premiums, you were going to make more in your second year than a 7 year NJ SIC on the 7/7.

A 7/7 NJ SIC has a base of $84,065. It's been discussed on this thread and many others a 10% base to gross override is a good estimator of yearly gross pay. -- That's how I arrived at the $92,472 figure.

I added what you quoted as your yearly medical premiums ($7800) to this number to come up with a second year salary matching what you claimed you should earn next year.... $100,272

I ran the numbers, and couldn't see how this was possible at Virgin so that's why I started asking questions about Open Time multipliers.

Crunching the numbers, it looks to me like a Second-year Virgin pilot could in fact accomplish this by bidding min guarantee 70 block hours, then picking up 20 hours of Open Time each month for 12 months. (90 hours)

90 hours seemed like a lot of time away from home to me, so that's why I was asking questions pertaining to average work days per month.

Not sure about Virgin, and cannot remember NJA, but my typical "cleanup" paycheck has about 20 lines of additional pay

Getting called on a day off... double time
Getting called on a day if for reserves...time and a half
Interntional overides
Relief officer overrides
Sick time
Vacation time
Open time pickup on a high demand day
DH pay...in my case nearly 7 hts a month
Training pay
Online training pay ( I did a ten minute procedures module, pays 1 hr)
Rig pay for both duty and trip

I've never made just "base pay x hours" at an airline. There is always soft money or getting paid for hours not flown.. We pushed 10 early today, got in on time, which netted me $30 on my one leg today.


Also, if you're gonna add the extra savings from medical at NJA it's only fair to add the additional 401k contributions from brand x and NJA. You have to look at all the differences that are quantifiable ie: things that are nearly for certain. ( I can for certain max out my line every month, but at NJA you are not always going to get an after midnight or a +12 hr duty day..)

Really depends on the airline.. ill fly 88 hrs this month, get paid for 100, add a little bit of international override, BUT will be out of my bed for a total of 9 nights.. origanlly was 8 but traded a trip....

I'll also be home, at some point, everyday but one. And will eat lunch at home every day but 1...

Airlines do provide flexibility in schedules dependant on the persons needs.

when it comes to potential applicants:
If you want money, advancement, structure - goto an airline
If you want to live in the middle of nowhere or not commute - goto Netjets

Another thing about benefits at Netjets is we have no Loss of Medical Insurance. The union negotiated a plan and as a captain I pay $300/year. I believe at a legacy carrier it is included with your benefits with no additional charge for this. I would not work in this industry without this option. Just my $.02.

maybe someone could chime in about the Harvey Watt issue that basically was "NetJets pilots are claiming mental health issues at so much higher than the industry standard that we are having to reduce the payout on claims because we are losing so much money it is unsustainable."

My Harvey Watt was like 80 a month as an FO at NJA, much higher than 300 a year. Plus they totally gutted the program and increased the premium.
