Default 121 Reserve vs Fractionals 'Reserve'

Someone on the other thread said at NJA its always reserve

NJA: if I understand correctly, get scheduled a tour, company pays for travel to/from home base, paid full while on tour, be it waiting in hotel for assignment or flying. Full pay.

121 Reserve: I won't compared with the at-least 50% of the crews who commute, stay in crash pads, wait to be called while wasting life away from family and friends waiting for a call that may never come, while on min. guarantee. That adults find it to be 'the normal' to live in crash-pads baffles me. At least the mainline and majors crews can afford to buy hotel rooms instead.

Not even comparing with airport reserve, that would be a joke.

So, one lives in base. Stays home waiting for his/her 2-hours call out. Definitely better QOL, being at home on couch binging on Netflix or flying r/c helo in the backyard and being with the kids who are not in school. But still owned by your company, bag pack, car ready, no going cycling during your reserve time, no going fishing, kayaking, etc, at home, on min guarantee. You want to go flying, you need full pay. It's not too bad but its not stress free and you don't know whether you're going or not, even if you've become a master at deciphering your PBS software.

I like certainty or whats happening with work, when am I going to work, when am I returning home and what is happening at work in the mean time, where am I sleeping tonight on tour?, I really wouldn't care since I am at work and paid.

Apples to oranges imo.

I thought in your thread that got locked we weren’t allowed to call it “121”? Your troll is weak, Sir.

Probably call it Major 121 vs NetJets to be less fruity of a comparison? 😄

So far as flying at NetJets... there really is no reserve. There is no line holder flying.

There are a bucket of trips assigned daily the night prior with redistribution of flying at 3am based on new realities and then as needed 24 hours a day based on recovery needs...

I’ve literally been reassigned airborne to both get a Cabo overnight or lose a Cabo overnight.

The change is constant but less frequent in the last year. Nothing gained nothing lost.

We really don’t care where the airplane goes... of course HPN in a snowstorm is less preferable to TNCM in February.

IMO. Does it matter principally where you fly ( not with standing TEB in a snowstorm)? I know “Major” part 121 pilot that bid HNL trips only to be reassigned to a Less advantageous overnight. While all pay protection remain in place “Majors” are not specifically guaranteed the exact routing. If a “Major” part 121 pilot can chime in if I’m wrong (please do). So a lot goes back to the matter at hand QOL. It’s great having points and a plane ticket to get to work. However if I could be base with a “””Major””” in the city I live in life would be grand whether reserve or a line holder. One would think NJA would lose the QOL battle. However if you choose to live in an non “””””””Major”””””” part 121 hub I would assume NJA would with the battle 8/10 times

QOL can and usually is light years better at most non regional airlines even for most commuters. Unless you absolutely need to live somewhere that is just a horrible commute, NJA is good, but not as good unless you enjoy working harder and doing more jobs while at work than the vast majority of non regional airline jobs.

Which major? Every one has different rules. Long call vs short call. I think only UAL has airport reserve, which I assume will be gone in next contract. Long call you get almost a days warning. Lots of guys on long call don’t commute in till a trip is assigned. Short call is a different animal. There are plenty of apps out there that trawl the companies info and give you hours notice about being assigned. The one I use usually tells me 3-5 hours out then I pack up my bike and head back to the house. It’s no longer like the old days of waiting by the phone, like the neighbor in the Bob Newhart show. Sure sometimes they pop up but it’s rare enough I don’t worry about it.

We get reassigned quite a bit. It turns out one of two ways. You get paid the same for less work or you get pays a boatload more.

Yeah I hear a lot of reassignments take place. But at least your pay protected which is nice! So comparing lifestyles of being reserve or a line holder as compared to NJA. One might argue in a nut shell it’s one in the same. The high light is a part 121 can profit more off a scheduale disruption more than a NJA pilot would being at the mercy of luck of the draw. So most of these arguments or theories relate back to QOL issues. Each pilot has different reasons for which direction they turn at the fork in the road of life.

NJA is reserve. Don’t get it twisted at all. You will life a life on reserve at NetJets. If you live in base, reserve at any major airline will give you better QOL and flexibility. Reserve isn’t fun, but neither is NetJets. So if you are living in base, pick the less suck and go with airline reserve.

Reserve at a major is as good as you make it. At my present gig I actually bid it sometimes as it usually pays more, has same amount of days off and I can hold weekends off doing it. I get 3-4 days a month not getting used and since the apps take the guess work out of when you are being used I go about my day normally, though I do have a bag in my trunk for the occasional last minute call.

Could it be better? Yes it could but overall it’s a good way to make a living.

Biggest difference with NJA and reserve life is at NJA you don’t get a RAP, you can not pick AM or PM reserve. So you may get the 0315 wake up day one for a 0615 flight, one needs to drive to the airport, and not get home till after 2200 on the last day. Yes at NJA you get some coin for that but it hurts to do it over and over again. Those are not options at a major reserve line. You pretty much stay morning/evening availability. Sure they can move it around but they usually avoid it as it leads to fatigue calls. So day one I have to be ready for work at 1200. I know I’ll be home in 3 days but since it’s not a piece meal trip it is usually a trip someone is sick for and this has a set schedule. Get assigned or self assign and away you go.

Even if you hold a line once you check in you are on reserve as they can reassign you whenever.

ha ha ha but in my thread that got locked, because people love to behave themselves, someone brought the reserve question which I thought was interesting.

Also, I didn't say "not to call it 121", I said when calling it 121, lets make sure you specify it's SWA, majors, Legacy. I, in my question, included all 121.
