What happens? Sounds like you just answered your own question, airlines will merge maybe? Maybe you won't be able to extend 6 days a month... The top 6 airlines could shrink to half their size and still not furlough just based on retirements alone. What happens when NJA has to downgrade 300 frivolous upgrades and furlough 500? Why even bother asking these questions?
Airlines are due for one more fold.
Companies like AS, F9, B6 and Spirit are ripe for the taking.
Bank on it.

Ripe for the merging into bigger airlines? Fantastic. You know with segment of the industry could be snuffed out by a bad economy and not be noticed? Fractionals...

I was only able to earn airline status one time while at netjets. Every time I’d get close they’d switch most of my flights to another airline.

Doubtful.
9/11 was an accelerant for NetJets business. I’d never wish another one but it was hardly a bad thing for us.
2010 proved to be the coming of the apocalypse for fractional between Madeoff, the real restate crash, the general economic crash, old staffing methods and old contracts.
Still here.
Meanwhile, following 9/11 through 2010, UAL, DAL and AA all ceased operations and were acquired by smaller companies... all of which couldn’t survive without the New combinations . Several BKRPCY filings, lost pensions later... “oh look... new paint jobs and uniforms for everyone”.
New unicorns make it all better!

NJA pilot riding on an airliner is more similar to "deadheading" to a 121 pilot. Except that they are also earning miles/status, upgraded based on status, and earn overtime in many cases (for them, it's like regular pay plus 150% premium hourly pay). It's nothing like "commuting."
