CS Captain Killed at Reno Air Show
Erica Simpson Age 32 (a Captain for CS) was killed Sat. morning after the wing of her home made plane broke off while doing a roll at the Reno Air Show. I did not know her, but I have friends that did and she will be deeply missed.

God Bless her and her family.

Wow - that is tragic! Article says she flew the CJ1 - I didn't know CS continued to fly CJ1s? This is a good reminder to live every day to the fullest. RIP
|
The "Show" isn't until this weekend, BTW. The accident had nothing to do with the races themselves.
|
Saw the website - I can see why she will be missed - you can feel the joy by reading those pages. RIP.

I instructed with her at ERAU in Daytona back in '99 and '00. She talked a lot about the aerobatic stuff she was getting more and more into. She even ferried Patty Wagstaff's plane out of St. Augustine from time to time. Man was I jealous; I've always wanted to get into aerobatic flying. I lost touch with her over the years. I can't believe everything she was up to with her career. Master's Degree in Aeronautical Science; Captain at a fractional; accomplished competition aerobatic pilot; A&P certificate... everything I dream about doing. Makes me feel pretty small. What a go-getter she was. I regret not getting to know her better when I had the chance. Really sucks when the aviation community loses someone like this so young.

Says she was flying a formula one category aircraft at the time. Always sad to hear these stories. |
I do need to correct my error of stating "Air Show" It was actually National Air Race in Reno , as she was doing a check ride to become certified for the up coming race.
A Scholarship has been established. FYI. Erica Simpson Scholarship Fund Security State Bank P.O.Box 27 Port Wing, WI 54865 This is her home town where she will be laid to rest on Sat. Sept 13th |
A few of my colleagues and I at Continental all remember her tireless work ethic when we were instructors at Embry-Riddle DAB (2000-2001). Day, night, rain, shine - this was one lady who had a true passion for flying. She was always smiling, and truly used the job as more than just time building. Her students always benefited tremendously from her warm approach to teaching and patience. The aviation community, and the world - just lost a kindred spirit. We'll miss ya Erica.
