Default 7/7 Free Time

Hey Guys

Just a quick question. For those of you who are on the 7 on 7 off schedule, what do you do with your week off. Now that winter is on the horizon and we are starting to slow down, I am not working some of my days when I am on call. I am currently on my 13th day off. I am not complaining, just curious as to what other pilots do. I am considering getting a part time job, but dont know doing what. I want it to be flexible. Any ideas? What do you guys do?

I miss my old schedule of 8/6. I loved the time off, but like you I had trouble figuring out what to do with the time. I ended up sleeping as late as I could then I went to the gym everyday that I was home. That many days in a row allows for a pretty good workout routine if you enjoy the gym.

As for a part time job, I had always planned on becoming a substitute teacher. My city pays subs about $100 a day and there is always a demand for them. You can work on the days you want and take off the others. Unfortunately, I never signed up while I had the time, and now my schedule is awful at the regionals.

Good luck with it. Let us know if you come up with something good.

Let's see...
I have a 2 kids & a wife, and all that implies... like date night, soccer practice & games, swim lessons, etc. I also have a dirt bike, a street bike, a sports car, several fishing poles, a camping trailer, a set of golf clubs, etc. Then there is also a house and a yard to maintain, a list of "Honey-do" projects, bills to pay and other errands. When all else fails, I check in to an internet forum or two and waste a bit more time.

I have no trouble finding something to do on my time off. What I do have trouble with is finding the time to do, all the things that I would like. I could be perfectly happy retiring tomorrow, if only I could afford to do it !!!

I have to agree with 993. Mt. biking, climbing, camping, and sailing. Now that I think a little, I wish I had longer between tours.

Not sure which frac you are at....but Summer is the slow season. The Winter season will get busier and max out in Jan-Mar. If you work for NJA, you will probably get better options on the pilot board.

You obviously have no family (or if you do, you aren’t involved with them).

I’ll second what 993 said, but add a kid, two large dogs, and no motor toys.

Anything I want.

My current addiction, when I'm not doing something more productive, is playing Call of Duty 4 on XBOX. There are a group of us from NJA who play together online, and it's an absolute blast.

Some guys run side businesses. Some will do extended days for extra money (if it's busy season and the days are available). I spend a lot of my free time volunteering for the union, and the rest of it taking care of my home and "real life" to take the load off my wife.

One nice thing about having a whole 7 days if that you can take a little "mini vacation" if you like. For example, if you're at the end of a tour and in a city you like, you can be released from duty, and they'll reimburse you for a ticket to anywhere you like, up to what they were going to spend to get you home. I've ended tours in cities where I have family a couple of times now.

Wow that sounds great! I like how they reimburse you as long as you find something of the same value or better. Sounds like they really take care of you guys.

They do -- and our union does as well. Provisions like that aren't just the company being generous, but are negotiated provisions in our contract. Keeps everybody on the same page.

Winter is our slow time. Dont have any kids yet, one on the way. Thats why I was thinking of getting a side job! Dont get me wrong, I have plenty of hobbies. Hunting, Fishing, Boating, Sports, a house, yard work, etc. But I find that most hobbies I do on my 7 off, I usually end up spending the money I just made from my 7 on!
