Default AvantAir in Thermal(TRM)

If you were the crew there Sat. morning, kudos for your reaction. Several things I noticed that I'd just like to commend you for your professionalism

I am also interested in details. I operate out of TRM fairly often and am always intrigued by the variety of flight operations that take place. The busy season for TRM/UDD is soon approaching. Watch out for NORDOs!

I was training a guy in a Mirage and we were doing our walk-around, AvantAir was on our right side just loaded up and getting ready to go when the fuel truck arrived for us.

The first thing is they fired up the Right engine, which was nice as it being the far side to our position. Professional courtesy that is easily overlooked.

This is where got interesting. The fueler finally got the right ground position for the cable(on the main gear strut, not the exhaust pipes!!!), then strung out the fuel hose and set it on the ground. He went back the truck to turn on the pump and when he did, the fuel started spraying Up and towards the right, shut off as we were yelling at him!!!! Probably 3-5gal of 100LL airborn! Sprayed our right wing, and maybe 3-5ft past.

Capt's eyes were pretty wide, as I was on the left side of our engine cowling in disbelief(and also in the position to run like hell!) and could see him from there. They signaled the linewoman that they were wanting to reposition immediately for the second engine start, in which they did. This to me was a good, quick, safety concious decision for all involved.

We're all lucky that they did start the right side vs. the left initially, I don't know if the fuel vapor/stream would've reached the inlet/exhaust of that PT6, but the results are up in the air if it would've.

I sent an e-mail to the company also, but it's just one of those things where I think some people might take it for granted. I think and feel that the crew exercised several small judgements that all add to the greater safety of both the folks inside as well as outside that plane. I'm not some Safety Nut either btw, a former freight dog and just a guy that gets the job done, so coming from me figure that might say something!

Ha, I can only imagine the type of traffic that goes into that airport. When we returned later that day, a C172 that was supposedly 1sm east, when we were 10sm NW, didn't even touch-down until we flew all the way to 1sm south to enter crosswind, then onto the midfield downwind. To top it all off, when we were on the landing rollout, and cleared the runway, I look up and he's already at 200'. That moron tookoff with us still on the runway! I mentioned something and never got a response, and I didn't get his tail-number or I would've tracked down the owner/FBO/flight instructor responsible.

The controlled chaos of Oshkosh is substantially different (and much safer) than a bunch of morons blasting around uncontrolled airports.

If we are ready to start with people around an airplane on either side of us, we always try to start the opposite engine first. If we're pulling into a parking spot and there's somebody on either side of us, we try to shut that engine down before rolling into the block to decrease noise & improve safety.

As you say, a little professional courtesy goes a LONG way

You're right, how silly of me to think that every airport should operate like OshKosh year round. Especially with lack of controllers and people that generally know what they are doing. And yes I've been to OSH during Airventure by plane and car.

This guy had a hard enough time keeping his 172 within 2-3miles downwind to base turn and doing radio calls appropriately. I didn't even know the guy was on the runway, no departure call out or nothing. Good thing we decided to roll to the next intersection and not slam on the brakes to angle taxi the 50ft to the closest turnoff. It's all about simple professional courtesy's that usually end up being a safety issue on the extreme side.

I just don't get how people can say something and not be there. Or if you were there, then I'd love to talk with you in person about your flying compentency.

Mod's can close the thread if they want now, it's being derailed from it's original intention. Hope they see it before it's gone.

Good reaction for those Avantair guys. Nice job.

I flew out of TRM with Avantair one day and the captain wanted me to do a run-up before departure. There isn't a run-up area and he didn't tell me he wanted a run-up until I got to the end of the taxi-way for RWY 35. I was turned towards the hold line on what I assume is A1. I did the run-up facing the runway (east) and then we departed.

Right after departure a guy on the ground called us on the CTAF and thanked us for blasting him, his plane and hangar with rocks and sand.

If the Captain told you to fly into a mountain side would you do it? What situational awareness did you have in the scenario you just described? What CRM did you use to remedy the situation? Sounds like you are blaming the Captain for a mistake that you share a responsibility in. Grow up and take the skirt off.

You blamed Avantair for the downturn in the economy and your inability to upgrade to captain. I thank God you did not ever upgrade. I also thank God you don't work here any longer.

I still can not figure out what your obsession with Avantair and Fractional flying is. You hated it when you were here but continue to follow it like a fan.

Enjoy your ground instructor job. Not everyone was born to fly.
