Do people really think fake furlough announcements are funny?

kingairfun 04-02-2011 02:32 PM

It wasn't a fake announcement..

It was the idea that on 4/1 the sky would fall due to the union not entertaining the idea of outsourcing jobs. Well 4/1 came and went, and as many of us believe, it is nothing more than a union busting bluff that hasn't worked thus far. Believe it or not, many were expecting to have furlough announcements immediately following the 3/31 deadline. It obviously didn't happen.

Funny? No! I too am furloughed and find nothing funny about it. But do find it interesting that after all this tough talk from our former "leader", in the end he is gone, and nothing has changed over the last week.

If you don't have the ability to joke around a bit about the whole thing then I am sorry for you.

The title of the thread implies an "April fools" topic and not some contractual deadline.

April 1st was indeed the day many expected real furlough notices after quite a few threats by Sokol- especially after all the 9/11 chops that he made on 9/11/09. The new union buster CEO has now said he plans on running with Sokol's 10 year plan so I'm not sure Sokol's resignation wasn't just a temporary reprieve. Scary times for sure.

I sure hope WB puts someone in there that really cares about the business.

It seems management is completely obsessed with messing with the union. Without the pilots stepping up for the owners, this place might already be done.

I'm actually suprised that we haven't heard more than we have already concerning concessions/job cuts etc...I would have guessed the union busting would have been a bit more profound.

In two years, this was the first attempt to modify the CBA. (as far as I can remember). All I can hope is that it occurred becasue of the sell-off breach and not some drawn out layoff plan....

Without knowing how the meeting and overstaffing issue came up, it has been said many times before (from managment) that the company is 200 pilots overstaffed (now it was 300). So from the outside, that info was nothing new.

As far as I could summize, the only way they could furlough that many more people would be to bring the staffing level down to the minimum allowed by the contract. This would basically deem the operation unreliable according to historic data on the staffing model.

It has been pretty quiet since DS left last week. I am more confident than not that furloughs will not occur. But if they do, I wonder if NJASAP will update the FWG link. It hasn't been changed in over a year. And I don't think those climbto350 supscriptions are still valid.:D (that was a sarcastic jab at the weak job ai we got from the FWG). Don't even get me started on the resignation fiasco or unemployment stuff)

I don't understand why grown men choose to continue working at a place where they feel such uncertainty all the time.

OK- start a great place to work and hire us. There really isn't a job in aviation without uncertainty. Even if your job stays around, about 20 percent of pilots will lose their medical for at least a year (not sure how many lose it permanently). NJA has more pilots than most and more drama than most, but you can't tell me their isn't anxiety for every pilot low on the totem poll at any company. NJA is still a much better job than most and it isn't like everywhere is hiring. The only other place I would consider is SouthWest with their proven history of competent management. They are hiring, but it's not like they are hiring very many.

We are pilots and the vast majority of pilots love to complain and most always believe the grass is greener somewhere else. Honestly I think NJA will continue to shrink for at least a couple of more years before growing again. I also don't believe they could actually operate it without killing it if they cut down to the contractual minimums. I won't be surprised at all if they furlough again, but they will be causing a lot of harm to the brand if they do it before they have sold off quite a few more airframes and truly become overstaffed. I am still planning on making a career out of it unless the wheels actually fall off. That said, I won't be surprised if the wheels fall off since this is aviation and quite a few were surprised when the wheels fell off at Eastern, Pan-Am, etc. I will go to plan B before I am willing to work the majority of pilot jobs so until the wheels fall off, I will continue to ***** and moan like most.
