Performance is measured by peer evaluation. Once the SIC has 5 recommendations from senior captains for upgrade, the candidate goes before an upgrade review board for final evaluation. The review board is knowledge/situational based and covers all aspects of the operation. There is no sim or flight eval required for upgrade.

Fortunate you are yes! I have a good friend who is good friends with management guy there, and my friend worte me a letter, but XO wouldnt take it because my friend is not an online guy! It hurts. I am dying for a call from XO. I'm having a real hard time meeting guys. How often do XO guys fly through Kansas City? I'd love to sit and talk with some line guys for a while! I'm considering leaving the airlines to go work ramp again at MKC just to talk with the guys! Any other suggestions?

I let my SIC fly on leg 1 after IOE (observing operational limitations). That said, I don't fly for XO. I just find that to be an odd policy. All of our SICs are qualified to fly the airplane.

co-pilots start off only flying the empty legs, at the captains discretion. We require 100 hours in type to be PF into airports like SMO or ASE. Once the co-pilot advances beyond IOE, they can fly without restriction, but still from the right seat. Once co-pilots are on deck for upgrade, they start flying from the left seat if paired up with an IOE/Standards captain.
We have a system in place that provides visibility to the Crew Resources people so they can easily see who needs to be paired up with an IOE captain or who can be paired up with a newly upgraded captain. We aren't going to pair up a new-hire with someone who just upgraded into their first PIC role. For the most part, co-pilots fly from the right seat. But as they get closer upgrade, they'll start flying more from the left seat.
Whether you fly every other leg, every other 2 legs, or every other day is up to the crew to decide. I'm with FalconFlyer and typically fly every other day. Switching every other leg is almost always going to result in one guy flying all the short repo legs and the other guy flying all the long occupied legs, and I prefer a little variety.

Wow! Thats great! FO's closer to upgrade get to sit left seat? That's fantastic! It would seem to be quite refreshing. This right seat business is really getting old pretty fast, especially at a company where the airplane is operated 90% Captain dependant.
