Without NJ actually pushing an age 65 rule with congress as well as meaningful plans to grow (which they don’t have), I’m not sure of a longevity career at NJ for a new hire. If long term is not a goal, using a 135 operator as a stepping stone to get to a major is a risky maneuver for a career. Sucking it up in a regional may pay dividends.
If you are older (50+), can accept a permanent career and pay scale in the right seat, and focus on the positives such as free good healthcare and good quality of life (while at home) then NJ is perfect. If you are young and have dreams of being a CA, making CA pay, and advancing a career, then NJ may not be the best of places (without growth or a law requiring retirements, your upgrade will be indefinite...meaning never). ....side note, you have to be comfortable flying with an aging pilot population and prepare yourself to fly with someone in their 70s who may make you a bit nervous.

I hate to be honest about this, but the over 65 guys are not very welcomed by the younger 10-14 year SIC pilots.
I was with another over 65 recently. It was one thing after another with him screwing up the box, putting in the wrong waypoints after he told me he checked them, and missing so much more. He never helped clean or stock. When I asked for help, it was the very familiar deer in headlights look.
They play dumb hoping you will tell them to go inside the FBO. My work has doubled this week doing his job and mine.

The union, as usual, is completely spineless and spends all of its energy tying not to hurt anyone’s feelings...right up until the crash. At that point they’ll act like it’s someone else’s fault because they just had “no idea” that ability level deteriorated with age. Who knew???

I’ve heard several of my 135/91k friends say an age 65 rule is coming their way. Where is this coming from? Is it supposed to be change in legislation or company policy? It would definitely make netjets a lot more attractive if they had about 400 guys retire and then some consistent movement.
