From the service aspect, I would be concerned that the FAs may target the more affluent looking males due to a perception that they may be better tippers, and somewhat ignore less well dressed females.

This definitely happens in restaurants.

So, tomato, tamata. My post wasn't meant to offend or some how minimize your position. Sorry you took it that way.
There is a law dictating that they are there for safety.
There is no law dictating that they are there for service.

Now for the company to get there 'worth' out of you - and the fact that flying of yesteryear was a classy endeavor - service obviously became part of the job; thank goodness even a majority of the job; but that doesn't mean that is the PRIMARY reason they are there.

From a government source - the Bureau of Labor Statics:

Airlines are required by law to provide flight attendants for the safety and security of passengers. The primary job of flight attendants is to keep passengers safe, ensuring that everyone follows security regulations and that the flight deck is secure. Flight attendants also try to make flights comfortable and stress free for passengers. At times, they may deal with passengers who display disruptive behavior.

But the fact that the airline is publicizing it is concerning. Hmmm, right before they start working towards a new contract for the FAs too. I can hear the argument now for reduced FA wages.....
Or increased income tax based on "presumed earnings".

Tips are another way that Indigo can justify paying the FA's less money which means more money for Frankie.

How’s about conflict resolution? How’s about a primary line of defense whilst dealing with disruptive passengers? 40 plus years... learned that F/As do more than just serve the pax and pilots.

Just one more thing for the FAA and IRS to launch a full blown Audit. Hope they don’t fib on how much they make.

Says in the article that the scanner will track individual tips. So paper trail galore. Wouldn't be surprised if Indigo sent them a 1099 for the tips at the end of the year.

Friend said she is appalled to see this. Sure, they get cash once in a while, but they are saftey professionals first. However many run a buiz selling their under garments to classy people on their own websites. I would imagine a lot more free booze is handed out for that cash in hand. Inventory will have to be watched very closely. Haven’t rode on F9 for years, but it was great back in the day to and from Montana. Lynx was wonderful as well. Good luck to you w the cba. Hope for the best for everyone over there.

On *carryout* in places like Papa Johns, Jimmy Johns, and Subway, I've noticed a new option (mandatory question) about how much you want to tip. It's in percentages and 0% is an option. Still, what are you tipping here for? Them just doing their job of making a sandwich or pizza? Again, it's not like you were served at a table and you'd pay for the extra/good service. This tipping thing has gotten ridiculous.

It used to be for giving extra for good service. Today, it's nothing more than an expected social norm that serves as a salary make-up.
The word “TIPS”, stands for “To Insure Prompt Service”. How much more prompt can it be if the drink cart is right next to you?

I agree with what you, and others have said... it used to be reserved for actual service, now every Starbucks and Subway employee wants extra money, just for doing their job.

Flight Attendant union should actually move to eliminate the tipping option on the handhelds, and explain to the group why its a bad deal in the long run. I would hope they realize that this WILL be used against them in future contract negotiations.

Just as everyone has said, this will be used as part of compensation. The company tracks tips and will gladly show the NMB how much FAs make in tips, therefor there is no need to increase the hourly rate. Exact reason why restaurant servers make a few bucks an hour, its accepted that tips make up their income.

And im sorry but you can't have it both ways; you are either a safety professional first or you're a food service worker in the sky who gets tips. As soon as you start accepting tips as a profession, it ceases to become a profession. Professionals don't accept tips, in fact, in many areas its insulting to tip a professional. Imagine if pilots starting receiving tips for finding "smooth air" or for arriving early? It would be an embarrassment and might as well have a tip jar out like the sandwich worker at Subway has.

Clearly since this tipping at Frontier has been going on for a while, it will continue as well.
