Looks like a rapid expansion starting this winter. If they make that a base we'd have new hire captains !! - Highlights - Daily - LAS, MCO, ATL

That place is like a plague, I thought I got rid of it went I left United Express.

I hope everyone is ready for 2 or 3 hour delays and being 20 plus for departure.

Not sure how it works at F9 but we get paid by the minute. EWR, PHL & LGA generally treats my bank account well.

I think someone has already joked that it’s the only base at a major airport that could go junior to Philly. Frontier management has a hard-on for the Northeast, so this makes sense for their growth plans.

It’s more like where there is a high density of population. Pure economics.

I'd like to know the real reason Southwest Is pulling out. Delays hurting the on time performance? Losing money in EWR? Empty planes? Cost of operating out of the sewer?

I’m sure Frontier will find out soon.

I hear you, but I like to go home. Also, gate holds waiting to get into EWR at the out station, dont pay

My guess is lack of aircraft. They’ve expanded into Hawaii and are supposed to have around 80 MAXs flying by now. If the MAX wasn’t grounded I bet they’d still be in EWR but with new routes to Hawaii something had to give. That said, I’m sure they chose their least profitable routes to cut.

I thought that was implied, but yes I’m sure that’s it.

RickGassko 08-27-2019 02:19 PM

Must not be too concerned with D:0

Turbine 08-27-2019 04:43 PM

Is it safe to assume that EWR is at the top of the list now to be a new crew base ?

303flyboy 08-27-2019 05:09 PM

RDU. 32 destinations.

New FA base end of this year will be announced. New pilot base will be announced Q1 of 2020. But it’s safe to say that whatever base opens next for FAs is exactly where the pilots will be going. My guess is all bases will see a lot more EWR in their bid packages. Smart business move with SWA pulling out because of their max problems. As far as our operation is concerned we will be going from D0 to D number 45 for departure hero 🦸🏻 😁

madmax757 08-27-2019 05:20 PM

I can hear it now. Captain can you please release brakes for an ontime departure - with people still on jet bridge and fueling :)

madmax757 08-27-2019 05:22 PM

Although it is plausible that it becomes a base if we do well there. They definitely kept this one quiet and maybe that’s the reason they didn’t open any bases yet this year ?

303flyboy 08-27-2019 05:30 PM

Possible. More likely though is that we just can’t do everything we want to be doing with the amount of planes we have now. Hence the slow opening of bases, routes and destinations. And slow is relative. Look where we are now and where we are going ..

hoover 08-27-2019 06:39 PM

Enjoy the construction for the next 5 yrs.

No it’s not. Would be a simple no but there’s a 9 character min limit.

Welcome to the Sewark. Those $15 fares should almost cover the fuel burned waiting as #27 for departure.

ShyGuy 08-27-2019 08:47 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed and miss my time at EWR. Lived locally and flew transcons, it was great while it lasted.

They do if your captain is doing it right ;)

You got that right

ULLI 08-28-2019 07:41 AM

We did same with IAD like 5 years ago. Now we only have handful of flights out of there. Let's see how ewr plays out and what sticks. Gate space is much more valuable at ewr, so maybe they will just keep on trying new routes till gate leases expire or just sell them to spirit or b6.

Sell what? The gates?! Ha!!! We use common use gates at almost every airport we fly into... that’s why we get an update every month that the gate is changing in some random city we fly into... the only thing worth a damn in Newark are the slots...

Notarealpilot 08-28-2019 11:10 AM

As much as I hate Newark I think it’s a smart move from the company. I just said on my last trip how I’m glad we stay away from those airports. Sorry I jinxed us.

Aero1900 08-28-2019 11:30 AM

With Southwest pulling out, this is probably a no brainer to try.

Im sure it'll be a very tough operation, but there's an absolutely massive population to support the service.

Agreed. Not to mention NYC is a tourist destination as well.

Newark no longer has slots. For almost 3 years. https://airwaysmag.com/airports/slot...rk-october-30/

I’m guessing here but I would think we would have to have a base open here in the spring. I couldn’t see how we could run a semi functional operation without it. Thoughts?

They will just limo Philly crews lol.

Punkah Louvre 09-01-2019 12:58 AM

I imagine they’ll just build lots of EWR overnights. The memo notes a lot of long trips out of there; Caribbean stuff especially. Day trips out of Philly for sure..

With the MAXes grounded Southwest has had to cut flying across the system. EWR was one such casualty.

OK, let's say you're the bean counter in charge of cutting flying at Southwest. Do you cut the most profitable operations first or the least profitable?

(Because every thread needs a Princess Bride quote...)
Yes, while true for Southwest who have a very strong presence in two New York area airports, it's not true for Frontier; who don't..
Focussing on LGA with it's fancy new Terminal will work for SWA, I'm sure we won't be short of New Yorkers willing to take the PATH train for Low Fares DR..

You can't be talking like that, this is a bash EWR thread. Come up with a "what exit?" comment of something involving the Sopranos or the former governor. Liking any aspect of NJ, let alone EWR..:p;)

I was based in the “sewer” for 4 years back in the day. Honestly I enjoyed it. I lived there for a year too...was a hell of a lot better then the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area...that place is awful! As long as you’re not in east orange it’s fine. I lived in the ironbound across from Newark Penn station. I’m not a city guy at all, but Newark gets an unnecessarily bad rap. Also the employee cafeteria in the basement of the ewr airport is the best! Miss that!

Was number 86 for departure outta there one day though. Pre pax bill of rights of course.

Reminds me of when the EU ATC was a hodge podge collection of nationalistic unions that didn’t work well together in the 90s and as a military aircraft you’d often get a “slot time” after you filed your flight plan for like 5 hrs (record on board in Rota was 23hrs 18min) later so you’d load up the plane and have ops send a “ready msg” to atc at which point a slot time would suddenly appear sometime within the next 30min to 5hr and when it did you had to takeoff within 15 mins or start the process over.
