Question from an outsider

You guys were kind enough to give me a jumpseat ride home the other day. I always commute on my own airline so it was a little different.

I noticed the both pilots had their hands all over the flight control panel. It seemed like altitude/speed/heading was set by a different person every time. I'm not sure if this was SOP or just a weird crew. It looked very confusing from the jumpseat. Is this normal?

Gojet procedures are frustratingly stupid. If you try and suggest any improvements the management will take it as an insult and your days are numbered. Its sad because there are a lot of sharp talented guys. But they are not in charge and have learned to keep their mouths shut.

So it sounds like it was SOP. I've seen some bad procedures (including my old regional). What surprised me was there was no rhyme or reason on why a different guy would set the altitude each time.

Yes I wouldn't listen to those two. Clearly the smartest guys on the board.

They're a defensive bunch

SOP used to dictate that the PM set the altitude, with or without the autopilot on. It changed last year so that the PM sets the altitude when autopilot is off and either pilot may set the altitude with the autopilot on. It often leads to two hands reaching up at once.

Thanks. That explains it.
