Comparing PSA, PDT, GoJet, and EDV
This is a PRO/CON question I am going to post in this forum and the other mentioned airlines forum to see opinions and input from their respective pilots, and possibly update if more information is obtained.
I am at 850 hours (I have to go to 1500 for ATP). I am looking at all 3 regionals hard now, while I have time to think and make the best strategic decision. I am an employed CFI/CFII and getting about 100 hours per month. Here is the best I can do with organizing the hundreds of things going through my mind. I would appreciate relevant comments to help find the right place for me. Obviously QOL is important, base location is as well. I am 40 and have a family so I can't really move right away, but may eventually. Reserve time is pretty minimal in most of them. I live in reasonable driving distance to GSO (a little over 1 hour) and RDU (1.5 hour) for commuting. I am not sure whether the commuting is a pro/con/neutral because they can all be workable but I did my best to decide. Endeavor Commuting by air to ATL, many flights from RDU and GSO daily Best pay Wholly owned Don't personally know any pilots who fly there Interview with Delta (not sure how long) Probably the best commuter policy Typed and fly CRJ2 or 7 and 9 but longer reserve for 7 and 9 Piedmont Commuting by air to PHL, about 4 flights from GSO and RDU daily (Only one base currently) Less pay than some others Wholly owned The pilots (friends) I know who work there are happy Supposedly Faster no interview flow to AA than PSA - Smaller pilot pool and larger flow numbers Decent commuter policy PSA 2.5 hours drive to CLT (2nd closest domicile to me) Less pay that some others Wholly owned The pilots (friends) I know who work there are happy No interview flow to AA (supposedly a little slower than PDT) SAP program Decent commuter policy Typed and fly CRJ2,7,and 9 GoJet RDU base closest airport domicile to me Less pay that some others Not wholly owned, future much more uncertain Don't know anyone who works there for true unbiased opinion |
GoJet
RDU base is the most junior FO base as of current seniority list. You will fly a ton. 10 most junior pilot lines in RDU from most junior to senior for March: 15 days off 75:38 credit 14 d/o 81:23 c 16 d/o 75:38 c 15 d/o 75:27 c 16 d/o 77:26 c 12 d/o 94:19 c 14 d/o 77:44 c 13 d/o 85:48 c 13 d/o 92:15 c 14 d/0 90:34 c 15 d/o 76:42 c ZERO reserve lines for FO's in March in the RDU base (and a couple others too). RDU can be held quite junior for Captains. Plenty of open time to pick up if the lines above aren't enough for you. Spirit pathway: 2 years on property & pass a personality test = pick a class date at Spirit. They have a nice new contract, $58 first year pay, $105 second year pay and a 2.5-3 year upgrade right now. Last wholly owned "secure" airline I worked for no longer exists. GoJet had great performance #'s which is what really matters. No need to commute. It was an easy decision coming here and I commute. Movement is fast up the seniority list and will continue in my opinion. The company hires alot of qualified pilots as Captains from other regionals and they don't stick around very long. I've been here under 1.5 years. One guy in my class was offered the Hogan at United, one is flying for Frontier and another is interviewing at Delta in April. Am I biased? Yes, I chose to work here and have enjoyed my time here. |
Great response

Not too helpful to be a captain who spends most of the time in the right seat getting no PIC time. |

Since November we have 1 confirmed flow. So .25 pilots per month. Expect a 75 year flow. GoJet has decent performance numbers for now. Cancellations for lack of crew have already begun and will get really bad over the summer. Expect to be extended on every trip (Personal opinion, I’d be surprised if GoJet keeps the Delta flying for another year) Yes fast seniority and lots of captains are leaving. Although many of those captains leaving are going to Endeavor for a $20hr raise. Last month GoJet lost 21 pilots and managed to hire 9. Expect to get extended on every trip. GoJet is not a bad place to work, most of the people you fly with are great and management has gotten more flexible thanks to the pilot shortage. It’s a fine choice if you want to live in a GoJet base and are comfortable making less money and having no real career progression. |
