Default CRJ-550 Weight Restrictions?

Is there any reason why they would be soliciting volunteers to give up seats for "weight and balance" on a 2.5 hour flight BDL-ORD with perfect weather and no need for an alternate in either city? Seems strange, any insight on why this might happen?

It’s pretty windy today.

This is also why I think gojet will get more bases or at least fly out of most United hubs.

YEA WHILE THE 550 IS STILL A 700. but united decided to cut us off at our knees by also reducing the max T/O weight by 10k pounds and the max landing weight

United had no choice. The UPA defines a 50 seat aircraft as one that is certified for 50 or fewer passenger seats and a max certified gross takeoff weight of 65,000 lbs or less. Allowing the 550 to operate at higher weights would violate the scope clause just as the E2 variants of the 175 would.

Are the weight restrictions usually an MTOW issue or a landing weight issue? Didn't think to ask the 550 pilots when they couldn't take me the other day.

Max landing weight? What's the max landing weight limitation?

The problem is that scope limits you on the number of seats as well as the maximum weight of the aircraft.
The 550 is just another 200 that has the BOW of the 700. So now you are limited to the amount of fuel you can carry or passengers. That plane is horrible on days where you need an alternate

On the 550, it’s 61000. On the 700 , it’s 67000.

I was told that United actually saves money with landing fees if they lowered the MLW.
Not sure how true that is but I also thought it has to do with scope.

See Hedleys response above, it’s because of scope

You are correct, landing fees are often determined by landing weight. Anyone who flew B727s saw a lot of different landing weight certifications, both TO and landing because of this reason.

You would think the United pilots might allow that number to be increased a little to make sure they have a better chance with the jumpseat. The 50 seat limitation should suffice.
