September, 2012 at PHL. The twist is she didn't fire the gun, a cop who was with her in the TSA room did!

Must be why I didn't remember. I recall the PHL incident, just not the gun firing.

Good work on being statistically exceptional KC135.

And yes, a pilot getting caught bringing a gun through security is going to marginally take away from the respect given to all of us, not to mention contributing to the likelihood of all of us losing expedited security, which is the more irritating part to me. Especially when, unlike other mistakes, this is such an unforced error.
Yes and that does happen but most people know not to group 1, 2 or few peoples actions with the rest of a large group unless there is a legitimate correlation. Does that make me think the rest of the traveling civilians are idiots because there are a handful of idiots in the population that brought guns through security? No it doesn't. There are pilots that have been caught doing a lot of stupid or criminal acts and most people are smart enough not to stereotype the rest of us. Nobody said anything about the situation not being a big deal. Don't confuse the severity of the issue with making assumptions that the rest of the group would make the same error. No pilots are losing any respect after this, at least not in the minds of those with marginal or better judgement and nobody will lose any security privileges.

Nope. Don't care who he is, but I care about what he did.

You just seemed pretty defensive towards him and he could make life at the checkpoint even harder for the rest of us. Pilots are supposed to be smart and not make mistakes especially with equipment like guns and airplanes.

Maybe my philosophy is different, but I have never been so casual about my guns (or my job as a pilot) that I have "forgotten" that I am in possession of my weapon.

It is a big deal, especially if he started his trip at another airport. This is something that affects all of us who use kcm. No need to get defensive!
The very first rule of gun ownership is know where your weapon is all the time and when not in direct use keep it locked up.
If you ignore rule one then rule two should be never ever place a weapon in any bag you use for work!!

I'm not defensive in the least, and stick only to facts. The fact is that he was caught and arrested, and the matter has been handled. All that's left is for the self-righteous airline pilot central crowd to crucify him. Do you people actually wear little white pointy hoods while you type your vitriol behind your keyboards, or simply pretend to?

Pilots are supposed to be "smart?" You don't know many, do you?

Pilots make a lot of mistakes, from failed marriages to drunk driving to failing to remember keys, firearms, speeds, calls, and anniversaries. Pilots make mistakes that range from going below MDA to fuel miscalculations, to landing on the wrong runway. In this particular case, no one was physically hurt, the pilot's error was detected, the pilot wasn't in command of an aircraft, and he's been arrested.

No, the four rules of firearm ownership, use, and safety universally are:
1. All firearms are always loaded. Treat them accordingly.
2. Never allow the muzzle or front sight to cover or cross anything you're unwilling to destroy
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
4. Be sure of your target, and what lays beyond.

You were close, though. Really close.

What sort of inside information do you have when you post that this has been handled? Yes he was caught and arrested but how do you know with such certainty that the KCM program is not being scrutinized because of his actions? Please give us more information on how and why this situation begins and ends with the New York authorities. Why has the TSA deferred everything to them? I'm going to go out in a limb and say that you have never utilized the KCM program. You don't really have a dog in in this fight.

How is it being addressed since you have the insight? This type of cowboy shenanigans is detrimental to us all. This WN pilot doesn't belong in a cockpit if he can't remember he has a gun in his bag. He is a safety and security risk.

I've been reading your comments throughout this thread and have found them highly entertaining. The above is by far my favorite, however. Accusing others of being self-righteous while bellowing at the top of your internet lungs that others should not even discuss an incident because you say it should not be discussed? Now that's pretty self-righteous!

You have brought up a number of good discussion points. However, attempting to shut this thread down by brow beating and belittling anyone who even wants to discuss the matter is the height of self-righteous indulgence. But please, keep telling us we can't/shouldn't talk about...whatever we want.
