Remembering Duke Elegant
A few senior members will remember Duke Elegant, an old aviator that over four years ago entertained us with his stories and then broke our hearts as he lost his battle with cancer. From his death bed he relived and recalled his adventures to the APC community.
Unfortunately the thread no longer exists and is forgotten in time. Fortunately his posts have been preserved here:
The Big Chill -Tales of an old aviator -Duke Elegant
Duke Elegant’s contributions to these forums were more valuable than anything I’ve seen posted since. I encourage every member to spend some time appreciating his work.

Thanks for bringing this to light. The stories are great, he gives us an idea of what it was like flying the tough and out of the way places in aircraft that were less than ideal and conditions that would challenge any pilot.
Great read. Courage of the type we don't get to see very often today, the type of courage seen in pioneers.
Many of us seek a cocoon of safety and dependence on others and have forgotten that life is more than just a goal of keeping alive.
These are stories in the vein of high adventure, like Capstick or Gann. Adventure may not be easy or fun at the time, but it surely makes for a well spent life.

I ended up printing out the whole thread (50 pages!). I have it with me for down times. It is a fascinating read. I bet he was amazing to talk with. We should all be so lucky to have the career he had.
