Marrying a pilot...
I know this is an online forum, not counseling but some advice would be greatly appreciated.
I’m in a relationship with another pilot at the university I’m studying at. My question is, have you ever seen a marriage between 2 pilots at the airlines? I truly think she is the one, but can’t get over how In the world that would play out. Especially since I would like to have children one day. I honestly just don’t want to waste 5 years of my life trying to make it work, and ultimately having it end in a divorce. Let me know your input on this. A friend was married to another FT pilot, they frequently “met” at 30W, less at home. It’s probably tougher with both being pilots.

Crew marriages are tough with kids, 18 plus years of bidding alternate schedules.
Been everywhere, seen a lot, have some perspective. I wouldn't do it unless one of you is willing to ditch the airlines. Or if you're sure you don't want kids. The silver lining... Kids will already be used to time sharing the parents when the divorce goes down. |
Honestly... All romantic feelings aside, look for a teacher or a nurse or some other extremely portable job. And find someone who makes friends easily and is very independent. My 2 cents. Pilot is not high on the list of compatible spouse professions, but there are worse picks.

It can be done. Make sure you're both willing to live in a base you share. This will likely mean a lot of moving around and uncertainty. Also be sure that each of your are willing to give up the career to stay home if you're planning on kids.
Don't commute in this situation. |
I know some pilot couples who make it work. But it's a short list. One couple was bidding trips together, until the FO wife put in a Captain bid and got it. On the other hand, I've seen a whole boatload of pilot/flight attendant marriages. Granted, it's usually the second marriage for the pilot. But they face the same scheduling issues. It can be done. If she's truly the one for you, you will find a way to make it work.

Been there, done that.
It lasted 4 years. Possibly clash of equally strong personalities, not sure. Others have made it work, I know a few couple @ FedEx and AA. |
I honestly know one set of pilots that got married... She cheated on him with another pilot. #dumpsterfire
