There is no "shortage" of pilots doing aerial fire, nor a shortage of those seeking to get in. There never has been.
Air attack pilots are seasonal 135 pilots flying King Air's, Turbo or piston Commanders, rarely a Skymaster or 414, who orbit the fire while a firefighter on board works the radios. I've yet to met anyone in the field who is having a shortage due to lack of applicants. Tanker companies certainly aren't, but neither are the air attack companies; and the notion of "ab initio training" for fire pilots through 135 companies is ridiculous.
There's no flow-through, no connection between the air attack companies and the tanker companies. They're individual operators competing for contracts. It's not like an air attack operator like Spur or Ponderosa is training tanker pilots or smoke jump pilots, etc.
