I think we're roughly on the same page, RickAir. Just differing in terms of severity.

I guess where I'm getting hung up is that the punishment was swift and severe just because it got some airtime.

If I steal a cookie. It's wrong. It's not more or less wrong if someone saw me do it. Just as it's not more or less wrong if someone didn't see me.

(silly example, I know ... but I think it helps illustrate the angle I'm seeing it from)

I really don't think it would have been near as bad if it didn't go viral ... so for me, it sort of begs the question: was it that it was inherently wrong, and deserving of that punishment, or was the severity due to some sort of public embarrassment factor?

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I really do believe that any commander worth his salt should be able to tune out the noise, put himself above all that and be able to mete NJP without a clown circus to guide his hand.

But ... I guess on the other hand, if the resulting media clown show was the offense, then it stands to reason that the punishment was cranked up to eleven.

Meh, YMMV. I guess there's a reason I'll never be a commander.
