Without an autoland option, certainly he could land the airplane. You might not be able to use the airplane again, though.

This. It’ll come back down and “land” one way or the other. The average joe would need a diaper after trying to land a 172 without prior instruction. You’d need a hazmat team for that same person in a 777 after they’re done.

You may be overestimating what's required of the average pilot by a bit. It's really not that complicated, or hard.

They would literally have no idea where to begin. I could teach my kid to do it in 20 minutes, but with zero training (or previous interest or knowledge in aviation) a non-pilot would be lost. Probably too scared to try anything, and if they did the alarms would probably scare them away.
