Default Global Warming Hysteria

First they came for the Tobbacco companies and we said nothing. Then they came for the Oil Industry and we said it's not my problem. Now they are comming for us.

http://travel.guardian.co.uk/article...techange?print

This new religion of global warming could impact our industry more than bad management and terrroism. Be forwarned and be vocal.

You haven't seen anything yet, just wait until they start imposing "offset taxes" in the EU and elsewhere.
The snake oil salesmen involved in this emerging "market" are numerous and held to an extremely low standard of ethics and largely unregulated.

Anyone involved in an industry like this is going to feel the sting whether they realize it or not right now.

Here is an interesting article about one proposed "Final Solution":

Eco-Extremist Wants World Population to Drop below 1 Billion
Eco-Extremist Wants World Population to Drop below 1 Billion
Sea Shepherd founder says mankind is a 'virus' and we need to 're-wild the planet.'

Apparently, saving the whales is more important than saving 5.5 billion people. Paul Watson, founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and famous for militant intervention to stop whalers, now warns mankind is “acting like a virus” and is harming Mother Earth.

Watson’s May 4 editorial asked the question “The Beginning of the End for Life as We Know it on Planet Earth?” Then he left no doubt about the answer. “We are killing our host the planet Earth,” he claimed and called for a population drop to less than 1 billion.

The commentary reminded readers that Watson had called humans a disease before and he wasn’t sorry. “I was once severely criticized for describing human beings as being the ‘AIDS of the Earth.’ I make no apologies for that statement,” the column continued.

Watson was invoking the worst of Robert Malthus, an English political economist who claimed that mankind was overpopulating the earth. That claimed first appeared in the late 1700s. Watson urged some solutions for mankind as part of a process to “need to re-wild the planet”:

· “No human community should be larger than 20,000 people and separated from other communities by wilderness areas.” New York, London, Paris, Moscow are all too big. Then again, so are Moose Jaw, Timbuktu and even Annapolis, Md.

· “We need vast areas of the planet where humans do not live at all and where other species are free to evolve without human interference.”

· “We need to radically and intelligently reduce human populations to fewer than one billion.”

· “Sea transportation should be by sail. The big clippers were the finest ships ever built and sufficient to our needs. Air transportation should be by solar powered blimps when air transportation is necessary.”

· At least Watson was generous and said people could still talk with one another across great distances. “Communication systems can link the communities,” he proclaimed from on high.

The Watson rant kept on going calling for everything from cutting down on the population of domesticated dogs and cats to cutting down on everything else in what he called “simplify, simplify, simplify.”

Watson essentially called for humans to return to primitive lifestyles. “We need to stop flying, stop driving cars, and jetting around on marine recreational vehicles. The Mennonites survive without cars and so can the rest of us.”

Sounds a little like HG Wells Time Machine. Any questions on who the Morlocks are and who are the Eloi?

You are right. Global warming will affect the airlines. In fact it already has:

Remember that snowstorm that Denver had right before Christmas. Got 3 feet of snow and closed Denver International Airport for 3 days. What do you think that cost United?? The world's second largest airline, at their second largest hub, on just a few days before Christmas (one of the busiest travel periods of the year). FOR THREE DAYS!! How about Frontier? How about EVERY other airline that flies into Denver. I talked with people who lived in Colorado for 60 years, and they had never seen a winter as funny as this year. And the airlines paid for it.

How about all those storms back east in February. How much did that cost the airlines? American, United, Delta, Continental, Jetblue... I have seen the most abysmal ontime rates and completion factors in quite a while. Do you think weather has something to do with this??????

WEATHER has a phenominal affect on the airline industry. Cloudly/foggy, windy, rain, snow, ice, thunderstorms, hurricanes... what does all this do to air travel. Holding patterns, diverts, delays, delays, more delays...
Remember, $3 TRILLION dollars of our economy is dependent upon the weather! If global warming continues, airlines will suffer.

Now, as far as I know, air travel only contributes something like 2% of the worldwide pollution. It is probably less. It is not that much. If they are coming after airlines, they are being dumb. But how about automobiles. How about power plants. Those contribute MUCH MORE to global warming.

I am being vocal about global warming for two big reasons. For one, I like the planet. I like the outdoors. I like the environment in which I currently live. I am only 22, and I am going to live for many more years. I don't want to see it damaged. The other is I believe that much of global warming can be solved if we just invest in technology. There is NO REASON why we can't have 100% electric cars other than we have not spend enough money researching. A little advancement in solar cell efficiency, and we could generate all the electricity we need for cars. Slight advancements in battery technology are also needed. We just need to invest the money.

We spend $533 BILLION dollars a year on defense.
We use something like 7.3 BILLION barrels of oil a year. At $60 a barrels, that is over $400 BILLION dollars a year. And where does that money go. Who are the top ten oil producers?
1. Saudi Arabia
2. Canada
3. Iran
4. Iraq
5. Kuwait
6. United Arab Emirates
7. Venezuela
8. Russia
9. Libya
10. Nigeria
Gee, how do we feel about those nations. Better question, how many of those nations are sworn enemies of the United States? And yet we are sending them HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars a year. It is downright crazy!!!!!
Oh ya, do you see a resembalence between these nations and the type of people who plotted 9/11?? What did that COST the airlines???

Fixing global warming is going to do so much more than fix the environment. It is going to fix the fact that we are sending HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars to countries that hate us. And not to mention sending money to people who used airliners in an attack on our nation, and caused the single greatest downturn in aviation history. Oh ya, and lets not forget about all the problems crazy weather can cause this industry.

until the greenhouse effect is proven to be the cause of global warming and no longer a "widely accepted theory" perhaps our efforts to better ourselves and our planet should be utilized in other means...

you can prove acid rain though... that's why we use basecoat/clearcoat paint on cars now instead of enamel. If you paint a car using enamel paint now you can see very very small spots from acid rain if the car isn't dried immediately. Acid rain is being combatted with new Ultra low sulfur diesel and clean coal technology.

you can prove and document earth's temps over periods of time but no one has yet to prove that the "greenhouse effect" is the cause of global warming....as opposed to say the sun (which we know very little) or earth's natural cycle... wasn't there an ice age a long time ago and dinosaurs and all kinds of non modern day life that existed and were destroyed...not by burning fossil fuels?

but thus far the argument for the greenhouse effect as the cause of global warming is correlation...not causation
and has yet to be PROVEN

Just my two cents...

Dark Knight,

Have you seen An Inconvenient Truth. It sounds like you have not seen much of the argument (from either side). I would take a little time and do some research before you reach a final conclusion. I recommend
An Inconvenient Truth as that is the best resource I currently know of with regards to the global warmining argument.
It should be pretty clear that green house gases are contributing to global warming!

I am glad the question of alternates to petroleum has been brought up, but it is wrong to assume a Military will be precluded. Where do those petro dollars end up? Much of it is invested in world economies, including our own.
I too am concerned about the environment, but I am also concerned with the economy and don't desire to see billions of people starve and freeze to death.

Best estimates of an entire conversion to alternate sources in the US send the price of energy up fourfold and would have the effect of creating cheap oil for that portion of the world desiring it. What would be the best and most feasible method given known and expected short term technology? Large scale use of Nuclear energy. Every other method remains a pipe dream.

Would this fix the weather? Does it need fixing? What is the ideal level of CO2 and what is the ideal temperature? That question cannot be answered at this time, but it is a fairly safe bet it won't fix anything.

We will always need oil in the foreseeable future, if not for fuel then for it's base in manufacturing numerous needed products.

The economic realities and the human condition must be considered carefully in any solution. We can't possibly grow enough corn to fuel our vehicles, but we could starve a lot of people worldwide by attempting it.

can't say that i've seen this single, produced by a former politician documentary

you guys noticed that "Award Winning" films these days are also "Conscious" films...so to speak

although i have had chemistry, biology, earth science, physics, meteorology, and conservation courses throughout my education

shouldn't my grass be greener as a result of all this extra carbon dioxide?

Wait a minute... Al Gore made this documentary! He was the same guy that invented the internet! Must be a genius.

Sorry, its just going to take some more hard evidence for me to buy in to it. But I do consider myself more open minded than most people. So if something comes along in the next couple of years that is convincing I will admit I was wrong and hop on the bandwagon.

happy skies

The carrying capacity of the world is thought to be around 4 billion (there are many numbers from different scientists). There is only so much water, food and other resources that we humans use everyday. Protecting the worlds resources from being consumed to the point of exhaustion is the only way humans and other life will continue to survive, and we depend on the survival of other plant/animal life. "Matter can neither be created or destroyed". Once it's gone, it's gone. If things continue the way they are, there will be a population crash because of a lack of resources. There are numerous studies done within ecosystems that show this poplation crash when resources are exhausted. I'll try to find some.

I too am concerned with the airlines and the economy but if and when the sh!t hits the fan, the economy nor the airlines will keep me hydrated or fed. It's all survival at that point. You can't eat or drink your money when the food supply is gone and the lakes dry out.

Yes I know it does evaporate into thin air but it comes back when the air gets thick.
