Boyd on Bankruptcy Myths
|
Ugh. Anything that Boyd puts out take with a grain of salt. After working at a company that was essentially "held hostage" by UAL and the Boyd group over cost cutting our express flying, I've found that everything the put out has a spin in favor of their major clients (And who would guess that they're companies in BK?!?)
The truth of the matter is that EXTENDED bankruptcies (can you say United?) Hurt the industry and were never the intent of the deregulation/free industry concept. UAL's continued existance in bankruptcy has allowed them to match fares against other competiton that might have been able to make a profit on those routes. While I might agree with the arguement about over capacity (and how it would be refilled if a carrier went out of business), it hasn't happened recently with a large operator, so we don't know the impact. What I do know is that some of the routes/flying that were dropped by other carriers that went to CH7 HASN'T been "refilled". A good case to look at is Midway. RDU remains a ghost town compared to when they were in business. I also know that many of the smaller cities and P2P routes covered by Transmeridian and Southeast Airlines haven't been picked up by other airlines. All in all, I personally think that anything the Boyd group puts out should be read with a bit of caution. They definately aren't an independent group. (Heck even the article they wrote was and advertisement for their "conference" in Savannah.) |
