Post Airline Pilot Perceived Fatigue Survey

Hello Fellow Pilots,

I am a Ph.D. in Aviation Candidate at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. I am a 141 university flight school grad who works as a safety investigator at a major airline. I am researching perceived fatigue in airline pilots.

My survey is anonymous and your response cannot be connected to you. The survey is Embry-Riddle Institutional Research Board (IRB) approved by the DHHS's federally mandated regulations for the Protection of Human Subjects. There is no risks in completing the study and you will gain the benefit of knowing you contributed to aviation safety.

I am looking for U.S. based Airline Pilots who fly primarily passengers (117 rules).

Thanks for your help!

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far! I'm still in need of more airline pilot participants. If you are able to, please consider posting it on facebook groups for airline pilots and other locations.

Unable to get beyond the first page. Kindly explain what age, ethnicity, and gender have to do with your survey. Fatigue does not discriminate against sex, one’s skin, ethnicity, nor age.

Really? You don’t think ones age has an impact on fatigue? You’re insane.as for the other variables, isn’t that the point of research? He’s not saying he has any preconceived notions one way or the other but he might, with enough data points, be able to spot trends among different cultural, racial, ethnic, and/or gender groups. Don’t take everything so personally. Sheesh.

If you're on leave, were on leave recently, or didn't fly recently it seems that will filter you out.

Why just the airlines. They are the only ones in the industry that get coddled. The 117 rules never extended to cargo 121 for example. Want to explore real fatigue issues investigate 91/135 ops. Just saying.

Maybe because they’re a safety investigator who works for a major airline and not a 91/135 operator?

Hi -

The target is U.S. based Airline Pilots flying primarily passengers.

The following things will disqualify you:
-Not being a U.S. based Airline pilot
-Not flying Primarily passengers (91K, 135, Cargo, GA, etc)
-Not having a valid medical
-Having an undiagnosed sleep disorder
-Being on extended training or leave in the last month for more than a week.

My literature review indicated that age could be a factor for fatigue. My survey does ask about gender and ethnicity, however, this is not a focus of what I'm studying and was added at the request of my committee to ensure I'm gathering a representative population. For example, I am a female aviator and the groups I am a part of tend to lean towards that population. However, just 6% of the pilot population is female. If my responders are substantially outside of the predicted population this would be an item to mention in might right up. Age (as long as you are between 21 and 65), ethnicity, or gender will not filter you out.

Thanks for your participation and interest!
