I’m convinced in China from the moment you walk through customs they know where you are every second. They know what car you are in and where it is on the freeway. They know when you walk down the street. What stores you go in and even in your hotel room they know what you are doing.

My understanding is, the Chinese place all foreigners on certain floors. They are not ALWAYS listening to EVERY foreigner. But they have the ability if they wish. And here's the thing, they don't even need to place a "bug" in the room. A TV or radio will suffice.

To make matters more confusing, a spy doesn’t have to hide a bug in your room to listen in: speakers serve as mics, so the TV, radio, and landline can all be tapped.

We should only take a look at Hong Kong and China. The ability of being tracked anywhere you go is scary.
The smartphone argument is invalid as I can choose to leave that device at home.
The fact I show my face in public does not automatically constitute my permission to track all my movements by an overreaching government.
The “if you didn’t do anything then you’d have nothing to hide argument” is a fallacy.

It's happening everywhere, may as well accept it. Lie back and think of England, and all that.
Have to admit it's extremely convenient in US Customs. No questions anymore. (Guess it took several decades before they realized nobody was checking "YES!! I am carrying all kinds of illegal produce and cash with me!"
If there's a line to be drawn, it's going to be in the commercial venues. "Minority Report" had that scene with the protagonist walking through a public space and all the advertising bots recognized him and tailored advertising his direction (which presumably, only he could see?)
That's going to get real old, real quick.
