Back long ago in a far far away galaxy when I went to college in this party town, my mother was mortified that I met the daughter of her friend (I learned about that after the facts).
The girl was (by chance) the fist girl I met in town.
One night we (the girl and I) were waken up in the middle of the night by (oh boy) her boyfriend!
Nothing exiting to relate about that night, but in the following semester the guy happened to be the professor of one of my classes!
I called the girl about dropping the class and the short takeaway from a long conversation was "the guy doesn't mix those things", so I didn't drop it.
During the course of the class I was treated with respect and professionalism, my question were answer promptly and appropriately, and my homework and tests were graded impartially.

I know that.

Nobody in that classroom ever suspected that the professor and I had ever had any previous contact.

I am sure he was fair and I was honestly treated because at the end of the class I was the highest grade, with a very distant second.

This man blew my mind, and I made a commitment to personally approach him to express my admiration and respect.

It didn't happen.

The man died a few weeks later before I could talk to him.

I've carried this event along all my life, and it is for me an ever present reminder to separate instances and keep my honesty.

That's probably why this video struck such a cord, never mind that I have also been on the other end of stupid, dishonest authoritarians.
