out and backs?

im sure this would be really outrageous, but are there any airlines that are "out and back airlines"... meaning, is there any chance that someday i can a job where i would get something like this:
get up, go to the airport and fly a day like EWR-wherever-wherever-wherever-EWR, drive back home at the end of the last one, go back the next day and do the same thing... i used EWR because thats where im closest, but something like this to any airport... sounds like a dream come true for pilot quality of life....... and his wife's

There might be an airline that only flies out and backs, but it's not going to be a career job.

These out and backs are called "turns," and most airlines have them in at least some domiciles.

Day Trips

Day trips are the indusrty dream. I have been lucky enough to have had to or three bids with all day trips. It almost made the job seem good.

Get the right to live and work in the EU and then you can go to work for Ryanair or Easy Jet. They both have schedules like that.

I worked for a non-sched in Nevada where we had schedules like that most of the time. The best deal ever lasted for about 6 months. It was 5 on, 10 off. The days on had a departure at 10:00 am, flew about 7 hours, then back by 8:00 pm.

Most every company (at least those that base pilots out of a hub) builds some sort of day trip lines (the number and value vary). It's a necessity to allow for the best utilization of the pilot group and staffing numbers.

Most of the time they go very senior. Personally I disliked them since you don't earn any untaxed per diem and it took me about 2 hours of commuting each day when you factored in the time to get to/from employee parking, through security, and out to the terminal (and I lived 5 miles from the parking lot)...

Some of our most senior schedules at Alaska are ANC, SAN, or LAS turns. Typically you show up at 7 and are home by 4pm. The pay about 7 for the day and result in about 19 days off a month. Sweet.

has anyone heard of a regional like this where it is common practice, or even Continental/ExpressJet doing this out of Newark?
boy that would be sweet

Different strokes I suppose. Personally, I can't think of anything worse than driving to the airport each day to do a turn. But that's just me.

Amen to that! Although there was a period where ACA was flying daily corporate shuttles for AOL from IAD to TEB... 0530 show at the hangar (park 50' from the plane/no security)... 0630 departure (we actually usually showed around 6), in TEB at 730, depart TEB 0745, back in IAD at 0845, home on the couch at 0915. Do that 5 days straight with weekends and holidays off... work another day job from home, and make your 75 hr guarantee.

for me, like a lot of pilots, being home with my family will be something i would like to have.. i am willing to sacrifice some pay for time with my family... going to work four or five days a week, but being able to be in the same bed as my wife and kiss my kids goodnight everyday is something i would really like to do... the per diem issue is not so big of a deal compared to the personal costs of not seeing my family.. that being said, if a "turn" schedule doesnt work out for me, i am still prepared to live the airline life and be away 4 days a week, just wish i didnt have to sometimes.. for some of the gray hairs on this site, these are some of the things we young guys think about and its not just about CRJ time at age 21 with only 350TT

amen, part two! and that's just what scheduling got me for tomorrow.

You may want to consider part 91 corporate. I LOVE my job. I fly for a construction co about 1 or 2 times a week with a good salary. no hassells, don't have to dress up like I'm in a marching band. I only have a handful of nights (15-20) per year I'm gone over night. no stress, unless we're due for a hot section. ;) or the gear needs to be overhauled.:(

I used to a bunch of great "out and backs" when I was based in KMEM and a senior S/O. They have them in all the aircraft in some form or another. Best deal was going to work on a KFLL out and back and gone for 5 hours payed for 6CH. About half of them were at night though, but thats cargo. And Rock bottom is probably right how could I make a career of that at Fedex:cool: ?

Garrettdriver has it. I have missed numerous holidays and the kids birthdays over my career until I was furloughed and got this great Corporate job. Never been home more, heck I am home most weekends. As a 121 pilot you have to expect to be gone from your famil...that is just the facts. Now find a good Corporate job and the life style is/can be very different. The good ones are out there.

Downside to Corporate…..Company losing money….Jet is the first to go!

Worth your time and energy to look into it I think.

FedEx1 11-07-2005 05:43 AM

Yeah, maybe I am wasting my time, trying to make a career out of Fedex, and out and backs. We have them on most aircraft types out of Memhpis, both AM and PM. An AM would be a show between 1-4 am, and back before 10 am. A PM would be a show between 2 and 4 pm, and back by midnight. Max of 3 legs, but usually 2 legs. The bids allow for only 3 in a row per week, though you can find more to pick up in open time.

nw320driver 11-08-2005 08:46 AM

They are a great deal.

Last winter, I would do turns to MMPR/PVR (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) out of MSP every Saturday. Depart at 9am fly to Mexico, on the ground for a hour and back. A easy 8.5 hrs pay. Plus we had a third pilot, so you got a break for a few hours. I would park at the terminal so save the time of riding the bus and the international override covered the cost of the parking. That was my best 3 months of working for the airline. Then you add turns to the west coast and you can get a full month working in 10 or less days.....
