NHRA Drag Racing

Was watching the NHRA races in seattle this weekend and was wondering if anybody on APC was into them. Ive heard many jets take off in my lifetime but their is nothing louder than two top fuel dragster taking off for a 4 second quarter mile run. I think racing a 330 mph funny car would be a real dream job.

Top Fuel cars certainly are insane....Racing a drag car would be fun, but I'd rather race F1 or MotoGP. You get to turn, and plus, the money is better.:D

going fast

Could you imagine the acceleration force of going zero to three-twenty or better in less than a 1/4th of a mile.

DRAG RACING IS AMAZING

Yeah, it would be interesting to see an accelerometer reading from one of those as it launches...

From a fan standpoint, I don't think you can top the NHRA. Going through the pits between rounds, watching the crews work and meeting the drivers is almost as neat as the racing itself.

I love it in the pits when they warm up the cars and that nitromethane burns your eyes.

AndreS 07-26-2007 11:19 PM

gotta say I love the feeling when they go by, and the smell.... nitromethane kicks ass! I went the last 2 years but skipped this one. as for getting into a nitro car.... good luck!
I'll stick to my 11 second street/strip car.... not as dangerous but still fun.... and quicker than 99% of cars on the road.

What do you have?

Kalitta Racing

Connie is still very big into racing. He currently fields 4 teams (3 Top Fuel & 1 Funny Car). Flies his little jets to the track every weekend himself and is usually back in the office (Kalitta Air) first thing Monday morning. If they lost during the weekend and you see him walking accross the hangar, turn around!

maximaman 07-27-2007 10:06 AM

His race teams have been struggling this year. I think his funny car team is last in points right now.

OrionFE 07-27-2007 11:02 AM

Yes, not a good year, compared to last year when Doug Kalitta was leading all the way to the last race and lost the Championship. His son Scott runs the Funny Car and I believe it is his second season.

chazbird 07-27-2007 11:29 AM

FYI: I believe they pull close to 6g now days.

maximaman 07-27-2007 11:35 AM

I believe the race in denver, Scott won his first round win in funny car.

Thanks for the info. Interesting, I thought it would be more than that...F1 cars pull more than 4 under braking as well as through the corners.

car is a swapped '88 mazda RX7 running a '99 chevrolet LS1 V8 (stock for now), built 4L60E auto with 3500 stall. weighs in around 2700 lbs & ~350 hp..... all under the hood and sleeping.

alarkyokie 07-30-2007 08:50 AM

Sounds a lot like the Sunbeam Tiger a friend had in college-289 ford in a soupcan,basically..

AndreS 07-31-2007 11:47 PM

the beauty of the swap isn't just a big motor in a small car. unlike most swaps, this car has incredible road handling ability as well... it can maintain a perfect weight balance, and the cars had great suspension from the factory. they just didn't come with the most desirable powerplant- a wankle rotary engine. while the engine is unique, its long term performance & reliability (or lack thereof) was far from acceptable to most end users.
