Does anyone know where I can rent a 172 or two in Puerto Rico? If by some freak chance the answer is yes, then do you know if they can be rented for more than 1 day and whether I can take it to another island? Thanks be very greatful for help.

Cuba would be a pretty long trip....
Puerto Rico is more advanced than most people think. There is some pretty healthy flight training going on, so there are plenty of planes to rent.
So, the answer is yes. In San Juan there are a few flight schools at Isla Grande Airport (TJIG). Last I was there, there were two schools on the field and they rent aircraft. I believe you can take the planes to the USVI and all over Puerto Rico. For international flying you'd need to ask the specific school.
Enjoy your visit!

I'll pass on Cuba...
I called Isla Grande and they said sure, but no over-nights... I would really like to stop for the night on St. Croix - but may not have that option. Do you happen to remember the name of the other flight school?

You are probably thinking of the Interamerican University. Yes they also have a flight school on the field, I never really checked if they would rent aircraft to nonstudents, so it might be worth a shot.
Expect to be spoken to in Spanish when the person picks up the phone, this is a local university. Just speak in English, they will understand, it is a flight school!
