Default Alley Priority LAX

Perhaps there's something going on that I don't know about, but it seems as if American enjoys a priority over Delta in the alley between terminals 4 and 5 at LAX. Several times my crew has been waiting to push back, only to see an American crew across the way pull the chocks out and start pushing immediately.

Is it just that the American pilots called the tower up earlier? Based on the number of times I've seen it happen, this seems unlikely to me. We've actually been halfway into the alley with an Aero Mexico pushback and had to pull it back in to let an American plane go by.

I understand that our (Delta's) tower controls the whole alley, so why would they give priority to American? Is it because American operates more flights, or is there something I just don't know about?

Thanks.

Probably release times, slots, all the good things that make major hub airports a pain in the ___
