Laptops
Does anyone carry a laptop with them for overnights or is it too much to carry around? Do you even have time to use it?
|
Oh yes. Most of our layovers are 15 hours or greater. Combine that with the wonderful airport vicinity locale... internet surfing helps pass the time and keep in touch with family via email or AIM.
|
Most four-days almost require a Laptop with the long layovers. I'm debating whether to take mine on my 22-hr three-day tomorrow...But then again - who needs a Laptop when you've got an iPhone LoL
They're a pain in the butt to take, but if you're an internet-aholic and/or bring DVD's, it's well worth it on a longer trip. |
How about during training? I don't want to be completely disconnected from the outside world for six weeks.
|
Yea I took mine with to training, and always take it on trips, even though it's a huge pain to get through security and I usually hold up the line. At least I usually only have to deal with security once a day.
|
Dude you NEED your Laptop for training. And also your car. Anything that can take your mind/body away from training.

It is sad to say but I'm pretty much dependent on my laptop. I can't think of an overnighter in which I didn't bring my laptop. During training we had free WiFi at the hotel so of course I took full advantage of that. The only drawback is the other day when I was dead heading and I had to gate check my bag. I totally forgot to secure my laptop in the bag and it ended up getting crushed.
|
Like, totally.
|
Do you have a separate bag for it or just stick it in with your luggage?
|
the vast majority of pilots have a seperate case for their laptops. just easier & safer to keep it seperate from the 35lbs of manuals we carry, and the rollaboard that's stuffed with clothes for the 4-day
that and it lets you keep your laptop with you in the cockpit instead of back with everyone elses stuff. |
I find it harder and harder to bring the laptop with an iPhone handy, the thing is awesome.

Anyone know anywhere in ATL to get free internet. I was there for 6 hours yesterday and couldn't get connected without paying. Makes for a very long sit :(.

I have the PNT bag with the laptop pouch and LOVE IT. One less bag to drag through security and impossible to find if you don't know where to look so your laptop is safe if you leave your bag in the crew room to grab food. I've forgotten to take it out at security and watched it baffle TSA for a few minutes while they dig through my dirty underwear before they figure out where it is. Kinda fun to play the "warmer, colder" game with the TSA goon:D

Dude, who are you? Hand flying all the time, iPhone, speeding in Mustang, girlfriend who cooks for you, offering to cook for forum girls, et cetera? And you're on first year pay? Are you like Ferris Bueller or something?

If you need a laptop for the road for cheap check out notebookreviews.com and look on the forums under deals. Someone linked best buy's deals of the week. I just bought a 15.4" Toshiba, high def screen, 160gb hd, 2gb memory and was only $599 before shipping or tax. Came to $679 all together and has the warranty. There are some for cheaper but I really liked this one. Just a heads up.

I just got an HP 6704nr for $550 from Best Buy. 15.4 HD screen with 2 GB memory and a DVD writer. Nice setup for the price. Had to replace my busted old Dell after the TSA destroyed it in ORD.
