Taking a girl flying

Uh oh..... So she has never been flying. EVER! I plan on taking her up on a calm evening, taking her over her house(class e) and then flying to the next city over(class c) where she goes to college to view the city lights. What is the best way to coordinate this with ATC? Should I call them ahead of time to let them know my intentions, or just tell them on initial contact? I'd like this to go without a hitch...:D

rickair7777 01-09-2008 07:25 PM

Calm evening air is a good idea, and the lights will be pretty at night.

ATC will be confused if you call in advance. Just radio 20 miles out and you they should be able to let you in the class C without delay (you just need radio contact, not explicit permission to enter.

What I would like to do is fly around campus which is fairly close to downtown. I'm worried I won't be able to get close, but I can certainly understand why they would say no.

If everything goes well, the date should turn out something like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gOhgCFX65xo

:D

nanana, why don't you come with me little girl, on a magic carpet ride =)
Good luck on your trip! :)

Contact ATC about 25 miles out and tell them you want to do some sightseeing and do a tour of the city and the campus. They'll tell you if they need you to remain clear of a certain area for arrivals/departures, etc. Also be sure to verify with them any time you want to change altitude.
I did some of those over LEX a few years ago.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks guys. I'll try not to make her puke.

In my experience if you stay around 2,000 AGL, the closer to the airport the better (not much landing/departing traffic that high). If they need a reason why you are doing it, tell them you are doing a sightseeing flight or a photo flight. A lot of controllers (especially if they've been there a while) will know landmarks such as "blah blah university" so they'll know where you want to go. What airport will you be near?

Oblique 01-09-2008 09:50 PM

Port Columbus, CMH. It could be an issue if 10L and 10R are active.

Did I miss something?

... You can always send a couple buddies to crash airplanes on those runways so they'll be closed. That's what friends are for, right?

LineTroll 01-09-2008 11:30 PM

Yeah, you did. :)

LMAO... for it to be official, make sure you correct the altimeter to non-standard temperature too. Wouldn't want to end up in the quarter mile high club. ;)

I get it now. I must be slow.

Even a blind man can figure that one out............

Ewfflyer 01-10-2008 08:39 AM

Over at CMH, it really depends on the time of day. I've been there at the same time every night, and sometimes the Rush is coming, there, or already past, no consistency for the most part. Just work with the controllers, but if you're going towards OSU, then I think you'll be far enough away that you'll be fine. Just plan on staying low and they should work with you.

Is it just me or is anyone else concerned that we have a CF $#*&$ing I asking how to enter and fly through Class C airspace?

You're a TEACHER for cryin' out loud...don't you know how to enter/transit Class C airspace by now? Or at least you know where to look for the answer in the appropriate reference...don't you!?

How many times do you transit Class C VFR without going to the primary airport. Unless you train underneath a Charlie the answer is never to rarely. I figure the guy knows how to get into the airspace but he wants to make a good impression on the girl and wants it to be a seamless transition. Cut him a break.

haha ouch john, I think he was more interested in the opinion of whether or not he should call them on the tele before hand or just wait 'till he's in the air. it would stink to have this girl all excited to go flying and then have ATC turn you down when you got there. :p

Oblique 01-10-2008 10:31 AM

Of course I know how to enter Class C! It's nice to gather a little info about sightseeing when you have never really taken an airplane up to just look around a populated area before. I've been in Columbus' Class C many, many times and I have flown to all of the nearby satellite airports. I'm familiar with it.

Columbus does get busy at times. I just thought it would be nice to give the controllers a heads up so everything goes as planned and I don't get turned away.

johnpeace 01-10-2008 04:17 PM

Sorry.

It says right there on the sectional 'contact xxx appch on xxx.xx within 20nm'.

You call up approach and tell them:
who you are
where you are
what you want

Haven't gotten that far yet.

Don't worry I'll post pictures up after the flight.
