living where you want to

a simple question. say you work for a major airline, do you have the option to choose where u want to live, like for example say i want to live in chicago, IL but the airlines base is in Atlanta, GA, do some airlines let u live wherever u want in the US or all of them?

Most or all of the major airlines let you live wherever you want. It is each person's responsibility to report to their base at the start of the trip and the commute might be annoying but they accept that.

I actually know of a mechanic who commutes weekly! He does four days of work and then non-revs home. I'm pretty sure it's rare for mechanics like that. However, many pilots commute to their base from home.

I jumpseated to Israel in '99 on TWA and on the returrn there was another jumpseater (USAir FO) commuting to work. He actually lived in Israel and commuted to Philly.

TLV - PHL...unbelievable.

There is a guy at NWA who commutes from Bangkok to Anchorage for the 747-200.

That puts a whole new meaning to commuting....OUCH

You can always look into the carriers that have homebasing. Then the commute falls on the shoulders of the company.
