Default US intercepts Russian Bomber

Look at that thing. Gotta give Russia credit for flying a prop lol. I like how they say the person spoke on condition of anonymity because it was classified as top secret. Wouldn't that count as treason?

WASHINGTON - U.S. fighter planes intercepted two Russian bombers, including one that buzzed an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific during the weekend, The Associated Press has learned.

A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 flew directly over the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 58 miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.

The Saturday incident, which never escalated beyond the flyover, comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over U.S. plans for a missile defense system based in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Such Russian bomber flights were common during the Cold War, but have been rare since.

The bombers were among four Russian Tupolev 95s launched from Ukrainka in the middle of the night, including one that Japanese officials say violated their country's airspace over an uninhabited island south of Tokyo.

U.S. officials tracked and monitored the bombers as two flew south along the Japanese coast, and two others flew farther east, coming closer to the Nimitz and the guided missile cruiser USS Princeton.

As the bombers got about 500 miles out from the U.S. ships, four F/A-18 fighters were launched from the Nimitz, the official said. The fighters intercepted the Russian bombers about 50 miles south of the Nimitz.

At least two U.S. F/A-18 Hornets trailed the bomber as it came in low over the Nimitz twice, while one or two of the other U.S. fighters followed the second bomber as it circled.

The official said there were no verbal communications between the U.S. and the Russians, and the Pentagon has not heard of any protests being filed by the United States. Historically, diplomatic protests were not filed in such incidents because they were so common during the Cold War era.

This is the first time Russian Tupolevs have flown over or interacted with a U.S. carrier since 2004.

In that incident, a Russian Tupolev flew over the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk in the Sea of Japan on Jan. 29, 2004. Since then, however, relations between the U.S. and Russia have deteriorated to their worst point since the Cold War, largely due to the United States' plans to put a radar system in the Czech Republic and 10 missile defense interceptors in Poland.

The U.S. has defended the plan as necessary to protect its European allies from possible attacks by Iran. But the Kremlin has condemned the proposal, saying it would threaten Russia's security.

"We are being forced to take retaliatory steps," said Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also warned that a new arms race is under way.

Japan, meanwhile, filed a formal protest with the Russian Embassy in Tokyo after Saturday's incident, saying that one of the Russian bombers crossed into Japanese airspace for three minutes. Russia has denied there was an intrusion.

The Bear has been around quite some time but it is still a very capable machine and Ivan is not the dolt many like to think he is.

The Bear uses two counter-rotating props and back when the west was trying to figure out the prop-fan, one thing that Lockheed looked at was a counter-rotating prop configuration. They reconfigured a Gulfstream with a prop fan while McDoug reconfigured an MD-80 with one. Odd.. but they found the best combination was something like 7 blades on the front and 9 on the back but I digresss.

The boys at Lockheed wanted to design the BEST gearbox to turn the props and the lead engineer said that after much research, much work, mush study they concluded the gear box on the Bear was about as good as anything that could be built. And that gear box was handling over 12,000shp and the Bear cruises at around 450-500kts so it is not lumbering wad. It IS noisy. Fliers intercepting the Bear say they can hear it a long way off as the props really chew up the air.

Interesting also is the fact that the Bear's wing sweep and the BUF's wing sweep are about the same.. I think 36 and 35deg respectively.

It also appears that Putin is rousing the Bears from hibernation. Recently the Bears have been shuffling down the Japanese coastal areas, up around Alaska and other regions.

Second video with some intercepts by F-102s, F-4s and F-16s. Gives one an idea of the longevity of the Bear...

Nah. Treason must not be a prosecutable offense these days, otherwise half the politicians would be behind bars.

Too bad we're going head to head with the Russians again. It'd be sorta neat to see one of these Bears at Oshkosh or Sun N' Fun... doing flybys at 7 a.m. It'd be a better alarm clock than the ultralights buzzing around!

You might see something cool and even more current on the newer Russian routes above (north of) the jet stream this time of year- it may not be on your TCAS though...

Default Great pictures of the intercept

This used to happen all the time. You are right about the sound. The first time I joined up on one, I was amazed that from about a mile away, you could actually feel the vibrations from those propellers. It must be tough inside the Bear, especially considering the length of some of their missions. As old as these airplanes are, they are still very effective at what they do. That is carrying very large cruise missiles out to engage the Carrier Battle Group. Although this one looks unarmed. They also do a great deal of Intel gathering on the ships.

Here are some good pics, you can download high quality versions if you like.

Enjoy
