Currently flying Primus 1000 in one plane and FMS 3000 in another. Both allow you to go direct (vertically, or "VTO") to a VNAV altitude regardless of routing. Granted, if you go 80 miles past your TOD, a problem would exist, but a few miles?! That's what's not an issue. It's been almost 4 years on furlough from UAL, I have not the foggiest how the VNAV worked "back in the day."

in the 737, you're already behind as soon as you start down at TOD...

You ever up in ANC in the afternoon (usually)? There is a guy on approach that uses tree and fife, etc.

I had never heard this before, until I read an article in AOPA making fun of this. We tried to respond professionally using tree and fife, and lost it in mid-tranmission.

I can hear it in the other aircraft's transmission that nearly everyone is equally amused.

THe AIM prints proper phraseology. The majority of people I know use practical phraseology, i.e. short and sweet.
I think this parallels the industry and the FAA. WHat's practical vs. what's proper.

Useless (phraes) phrases? How about a useless thread like this one. Gimme a break man! What, are we all just a bunch of walking AIM's here or something? We are (mostly) proffesionals but we don't have to be robots! And it is OK to be friendly once in a while on the radio. Some controllers sure are, and it is their turf.

XYZ 1234 vacating FL230 for xxxxx.... Vacating? Like a hotel/motel vacancy?

My pet peeve is when you pick up a clearance that is like this one...
You are cleared to XYZ as filed, climb and maintain 3,000 expect 5,000 in 10 minutes departure is 126.95 squawk 3371.

Everyone reads this back word for word! It's as filed people!

I say...
Acknowledge clearance, squawk 3371.

They say, read back correct. Done!

It took SO much less time. If they give you the full route they want to hear it. If they give you as filed, they expect that you have it already, so why read it back?

The other thing that irks controllers (I know a few) is when pilots say 'three point five' meaning 3,500. I've heard them ***** about it. Just say thirty-five hundred or three thousand five hundred.

Just my opinion.

When you are given pilot's discretion for a lower altitude, that call is a recommended call according to the AIM. Vacating is the correct phraseology. :)

I agree, I flew a lot in Northern Az. There are so many old school GA pilots who are soooo slow and stupid when it comes to radio calls. The best phrase I like to use because it sound like Im actually flying something cool is the word vacating in stead of leaving or descending an altitude. lol
