Default Woodcarving

Not aviation related, but I am curious if anyone is into woodcarving. I am thinking of taking a class soon. My first project is a model airplane, of course.

Any tips for a newbie? What kind of wood is best and easiest? Where do I get these chunks of wood? What kind of knife should I get?

I'm not into wood carving but Woodcraft Supply might be a good place to start. I checked the website (www.woodcraft.com) and there's a store in Seattle. The local store to me is pretty good - all the employees are very knowledgable.

Wood carving? That actually sounds relaxing for a change. I need to wittle some wood on the front porch with my beagle and a cold one.
