I still wear my original pair. I have had them since 2000 or so. They are my favorite shoes...I guess you could say I'm attached to them in some wierd, sick way?...

But I don't wear them to work. I'm all about Rockports. No steal shanks, and very comfy!

Trick for determining if shoes are TSA friendly or not:

Metal detectors are magnetometers (magnet-o-meter) so its just a big magnetic force indicator. Without getting into the engineering behind how those things work just think of it as a big magnet. If you hold any magnet up to the sole of a pair of shoes and the magnet sticks, it will set of the detector. If it doesn't stick, there is no steel shank so you won't need to take them off.

Many higher-end brands have dropped steel shanks because they lead to a longer break-in time. Allen Edmund and Johnston & Murphy for example are all airport-friendly. They are a little pricey but very comfortable and if you take care of them, they will look good and last forever. Hope this helps!

I have these Docs and they have some sort of metal eyelet on the inside of the shoes. I don't want to wear them though to test run security, because if I wear them and they set off the detectors I can't take them back.

I wore docs in 7th grade.

You guys can't be serious, saying you still wear them now.

They look terrible, and wearing them with a uniform makes us all look bad.

I saw a AWAC guy with them on 2 days ago and laughed out loud.

Buy some cheap normal black shoes. There have been countless threads about options.

Best shoes ever. Worn by real pilots.

Its cool if you guys in the fancy RJ's like that metro look, im sure the flight attendents love it.

Sadly, my FOM specifically prohibits wearing Docs. (Seriously: they are referred to by name.)

Cheeks22 is right. The shoes are junk now, since they make them in China. They are no more Doc Martens. They are now Doc Changs.
