Where airplanes go to die
|
If you had told Mr. Douglas back in 1968 that the DC-9's his company was making then would be flying well into the next century, I am sure he would have laughed. But the first plane I ever flew in (a North Central DC-9) is probably sitting at the A Concourse in Detroit right now.

That's a lot of metal!
|
Not a single DC-8 pictured..........:D

Those are some of the best graveyard shots I've seen...Is that Mojave?
Also, isn't that the launch 747? I thought that had been donated to Smithsonian, to be used at a later date? Maybe it's not the same plane? |
hey i believe that's right on Alvernon in tucson right across from AMARC Davis Monthan AFB (ie the boneyard) ... i believe i've seen that Somali bad boy before? The guy runs the junk shop and tried to sell the Pan Am logo to a friend of mine for 1k. Ive got several pieces out of there myself no logos though. This is a private parts vendor right? Looks familiar i might be way off...planes are laying to rest everywhere these days.

I want to get the Lodestar and restore it!
|
Very cool and thanks for posting. My favorite is the picture with the luggage still there. That's priceless!

THERE'S my suitcase! I told lost baggage that it never made it off the plane!
Pic #6 I saw a television show once where movable surfaces were polished and made into coffee tables and alike. I would love to have some of that stuff to tinker with and eventually display in my home. |

...all I can say is...Wow...
Thanks again for posting. |
Are there different "stages" for aircraft out there? Some of those 47's and DC-9's look like they could be back up and running pretty easily. It also looks like extra care was given in regards to the landing gear, nacelles and windows on some of those.
|
Can anyone tell me where i can get a set of first class seats from a classic airplane. I'm not picky about what plane it comes out of and I would like to fix them up myself.
|
Check Ebay, they used to have several L-1011 and 727 seats on there.
|
I always thought it would be cool to take some of those parts and decorate my house with them...
put some fan blades on the wall or somethin'... |
Awesome slideshow. Thanks for sharing!

Boneyard Locations
Those shots are a compiliatiion of at least three locations:
1. A commercial yard near Davis-Monthan AFB. (727s and 707s) 2. Davis-Monthan AFB (Tomcats, etc) 3. Mojave (the original 747) and possibly Marrana, AZ, at Evergreen's boneyard. Certain parts are commonly pulled and reused, such as landing gear, engines or engine pieces, and windows. Aluminum just gets scrapped. Think how many airliners or military aircraft you have personally tossed in the heap as a used soda or beer can...sad to contemplate the history of it. |
If you wanna watch a sad story, visit this...
YouTube - Boeing 720 Demo Sources say there were about 65 720s and 89 720Bs produced. NW used to bring its 720s into ATL when I was a kid and they were home sick angels on climb out. Eastern also operated some 720s and they were considered real hot rods by the pilots. United, Continental and Western also flew this short range version of the 707. The stop-action video starts with the 'monster' chopping off the cockpit. Not pretty.. |

That was neat, but I'd rather see that thing chop up an RJ or an Embrarer, not a Boeing:eek:
