F-22 Buzzing Seattle

This is raw video, so no sound or commentary. I'd like to know why the plane didn't have bombs! :)

I'm still an F-18 kinda girl.

It may just be that I didn't pick up on sarcasm, or I'm completely wrong but I believe the bombs are stored internally.

The -22 is produced here in Marietta and we see them frequently. But ALL stores are carried internally to retain the stealth profile. Hang stuff on pylons or stations and the stealth disappears.

OldAg84 07-18-2008 05:27 AM

They are neat looking planes. When I was in Marietta I saw one on approach to Dobbins with an F-16 as chase. It sure made the F-16 look small!

HoursHore 07-18-2008 05:31 AM

Those things are quiet. :p :D ;)

USMCFLYR 07-18-2008 05:43 AM

You know - the article using the word "buzzing" or "buzz over" is sensationalism. Those words carry the image of aircraft at only a few hundred feet of less zooming back and forth like some cowboys. That video looked to me like two F-22s in parade formation coming into the break (overhead) and then landing.

Sleek aircraft btw. Like most airplanes - they look a lot better flying than sitting on the deck.

This is a complementary follow up article about one of the pilots of the two F-22s - a female and from Washington! I am going out of town this weekend, otherwise, I would be first in line at McChord on Saturday.

From Seattle PI:
As top military fighters descend on Tacoma and Seattle air shows to spotlight their flying skills during the next few weeks, they will be joined by some very talented women.

At McChord Air Force Base, two from the nation's growing group of female fighter pilots will appear this weekend, building on the hard-fought legacy of flying women such as the famed Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II -- the WASPs.

Maj. Samantha Weeks, 32, a member of the Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team, will handle the lead solo F-16 Fighting Falcon jet in two Air Expo 2008 performances at McChord Air Force Base this weekend.

At the controls of a lethal military aircraft, gender doesn't matter

Not entirely true. Can't remember if it was at Langley or at Dobins (Marietta) when I was doing Safety Chase on new F-22's doing acceptance flights, but I definitely saw Raptors with External Wing tanks.

Quick Raptor Google Kung-fu

Yes, looks like a sparrow flying with an eagle and the machines sound VERY different. You can tell when the -22 is up. Also, they are flying the re-engined C-5 frequently and it is so quiet it is spooky.

the King 07-18-2008 08:58 PM

I believe the Raptor has mounting points on the outside in case they want to load it up for an assault, but right on about that ruining the stealth.

LineTroll 07-19-2008 12:34 AM

Came into BFI, unfortunately I missed their arrival. I didn't get here until they were inside the gate :( Oh well I got to see some Kfirs while they were here, which are LOUD and fun to watch :) Plus F18s are going down to Clay all the time.

I believe all fighters have 'hard points' and you are correct about the -22. Here is a shot of it intercepting a Bear and you can see the large underwing drop tanks.

That has actually been one of the things that we joke about the F-35 too. They spend all that money on stealth and then the first thing the Marines will do when we get it is hang everything and the kitchen sink off of it :D:eek: Oh well.......

Just remember the old axiom. never fly the A model of any airplane

The second axiom is the C model eventually becomes what the A was supposed to be but heavier and more costly.

And when you read the lit on the -35, you see that it says something about VTOL with 'light loads' meaning it will not carry a full bag of ord when operating from FOLs.

From what I have been reading, the -22 no longer has any real friends either in Congress or the USAF. The seeming intent is to terminate the -22 line, go for the -35. One has to wonder. The procurement process seems a bit confused.

The A-6 had new wings and was ready to go when they decided to get rid of it for more F/A-18s which didn't have the range or payload. Now they are getting rid of the EA-6s with the Growlers and that too reportedly does not have the capability of the Prowler. And don't even start with the tanker chocies. ???

Seems the main thing is to spend money.

[quote=III Corps;429174]Just remember the old axiom. never fly the A model of any airplane

Whoops - blew that one. Flew the A through D model - though my first A model were still Lot 9s - GREAT airplanes and probably the best lot for BFM (at least until the Lot 16-18).

The second axiom is the C model eventually becomes what the A was supposed to be but heavier and more costly. True

And when you read the lit on the -35, you see that it says something about VTOL with 'light loads' meaning it will not carry a full bag of ord when operating from FOLs.
And how often did the Harriers work forward (meaning not from prepared airfields?) I'm not a huge believer in the VSTOL version - I think we should go with the Carrier version personally.

Now they are getting rid of the EA-6s with the Growlers and that too reportedly does not have the capability of the Prowler. And don't even start with the tanker chocies.
I've not been around the EW community much, but I have seen some of the Growler's lit and talked to a few of the pilots whom have come through Lemoore for initial training and I haven't heard anything along the lines of the Growler not having the capabilities of the Prowler - and knocking down that crew from 4 to 2. Instead of listening to one side of the stroy or the other - I'll wait to hear from some prior Prowler guys who have moved over to the Growler.

Don't know what I was thinking but you're right. I have not seen the -22s around Dobbins with tanks but here's a shot of the Raptor chasing a Bear. http://tinyurl.com/56grb9

What I meant to say was on ingress the Raptor will probably be clean for the smallest radar paint. Tanks may be used but dropped at some point.

Photon 07-21-2008 07:16 AM

man, the raptor is still my favorite airplane in the world, so beautiful :). Nice vid!

My office is along the centerline for dobbins rwy 29 and we see the -22 overhead almost on a daily basis. I always run outside to see them

Odd sound when it is just loafing around the pattern, huh? But no doubt what it is when it lines up for T/O...

Raptor Odds and Ends

I was at Tyndall today and got a tour of the airplane from the maintenance Senior Chief.

He showed me the areas under the wings where external racks, for anything from Air-air missiles to bombs, could be carried.

Of course, that comes at a cost of supercruise and stealth.

He said the external tanks are virtually identical (externally) to F-15 tanks, but were configured slightly different internally.

I'll have to disagree with Photon and say that while the F-22 is an impressive airplane in capability, I think the Eagle, Viper, and even the Hornet are sleeker looking airplanes than either the F-22 or the F-35.

It's similar to comparing classic muscle-cars and new cars--the classics have a personna; the new cars are almost identical.

USMCFlyer:

I have to ask: When you launch an EA-18G off the carrier catapault, is that a "Steaming Growler?"

NICE!

I sorta agree with you on Raptor looks. Nose-on and Top views look sharp, but the side profile view is a little off for me. The nose kinda looks like it belongs on a boat (sorta has a keel) and the fuselage has sort of a flying-saucer curvature on the bottom. Yes, I know, all body-lift and stealth considerations. Would I still take a Raptor RTU slot to fly that bad boy? Hell yeah!!

Photon 07-21-2008 06:41 PM

identical? meh
there's something about the shape of the f-22 that just makes it sexeh :)

Anything called a Prowler or Growler is steaming as it comes off the cat :D
You know what though - although tanking is just a secondary mission for the Super Hornets - I'd rather do the EA mission than the tanking mission in any pointy nosed fighter.

Btw - when I got my first up close look at the F-22 - I'd have to agree with Nortonious about the funny looking nose. INflight it looks much better.

Completely off topic but if you're not from the Seattle area, i would like to point out that its NOT always raining up there (as seen in the video) :D

Aug 1-3 is SeaFair and the airshow over Lake Washington... great weekend to be in Seattle if any can!!

vagabond 07-23-2008 07:23 PM

You saw rain in that video? Better get your eyes checked right away! :)

SeaFair is also when the Blue Angels come to town and this year is no different. If anybody is coming to Seattle that weekend, let me know and you are invited to the vagabond household BBQ. And contrary to popular belief, I will not be serving fried locusts and braised chicken beaks this year. Wheee!

BankAngle09 07-24-2008 06:54 AM

Vag, have another look girl... i should have turned the caps on for the word "NOT" i inserted before "always raining"

SeaFair is good times, been every year since i was 5 y.o... the boom is good times!

ebl14 07-24-2008 10:43 PM

Where are you Seattlites from. I live in Everett...

BankAngle09 07-27-2008 03:21 PM
