Great video B-58

jagbn 09-10-2008 08:47 AM

The pilot getting out of the B-58 at the end of the video enlisted as a private in 1941 before Pearl Harbor, was commissioned after completing pilot training, instructed in B-17s before deploying to Europe, flying at least 20 combat missions in the B-24. At the end of the war, he was a Colonel, with a Distinguished Flying Cross and several Air Medals.

He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve despite a lucrative civilian career, reaching the rank of Brigadier General. He flew as an observer on a B-52 mission over Vietnam during that war.

You may know him better as Jimmy Stewart.

Was that Jimmy Stewart?

(Edit) Beat me to it!

My grandpa flew -24s with him in New Mexico for training. He has some nice pics of the 2 of them squating over a hole in the ground, doing something!

Definitely in agreement. Class act in all cases. But, I think you are mistaken in that I don't think he participated in the Ploesti raid as part of Operation Tidal Wave.

Jimmy Stewart

Pretty sure he did not fly B-58s. Think it was B-36s in the Air Force Reserve, although he was portrayed as a B-47 pilot in at least one movie.

Wikipedia says he flew Singles and Twins in an IP role about 1942, then B-17s in a training role, and flew combat in the B-24. It does not say he flew to Ploesti. It confirms he flew as an observer in the BUFF in Vietnam.

John Denver's dad set a low-altitude speed record in the B-58. Denver's real last name was Deutchendorf.

Jimmy stewart was one stand-up guy.
