Just a Thought Along Our Road to Utopia
As our misguided politicians continue to seductively lead the lemming masses down the road to socialism, a road paved with good intentions, this thought occured to me: how long will it be until there are caps placed on people's take home pay in the interest of the "better good", the "needs of your fellow man", "social 'justice'", "the children", etc?
I mean, no kidding, a day coming when the government mandates that if you are say married and have x number of kids or are single and have no kids that you are only entitled to a certain amount of money and the rest must go to pay down our crushing national debt or to those less fortunate than you, to pay for other people's healthcare, child care or whatever. Don't think that's possible? It'll never happen you say? The guy writing this is obviously a crackpot!?!
It's already starting to happen right now and we collectively don't seem to care. In fact, most of us lemmings think it's a good thing! I'm talking about the government considering capping executive compensation at companies that have received a government bailout (something IMHO we should have never have done - a good discussion topic for another day). Make no mistake, from where I sit I have little sympathy for the "rich" executive and his "plight". But, who am I to say how much anyone makes in this (once?) free land? If the "rich" executive makes too much from where I sit, what's keeping someone from saying I make too much money from where they sit. I'm sure there are PLENTY of people in this country right now who think your airline salary (the reality of airline salaries notwithstanding) is exorbitant. As many of you well know, lots of people think YOU are the "rich" and some of them likely think YOU make more money than you deserve - although they probably wouldn't say it to your face.
I'm sure many (most?) of you think I'm nuts, but I think with the way we're going it's entirely possible that some day private sector salaries will be capped based on what the government deems you "need" or what is "fair". It won't happen soon, but I think we would be fools to think and act as if it would never happen or "couldn't" happen. Think about it.
And thus the crazy rantings of a middle age man end for today. . .
