Do you "wave"?

'Round these parts, everybody waves at each other. It's a "HEY" throwback from
Mayberry.
This morning, it made me ponder;
What is your waving protocol? Do you wave at ramp personnel, other pilots,
little kids in the windows? Just wondered...
This could be a photo thread..

TPROP4ever 06-16-2009 05:40 AM

Always wave, its polite, and shows professionalism....

Planespotta 06-16-2009 05:45 AM

Of course I wave . . . especially when it's a young kid, because I remember how much that meant to me :)

Gajre539 06-16-2009 06:54 AM

I wave to pilots, ground crew, kids, airport ops or anyone else while I'm in the plane. If I'm on the ground walking somewhere, I just nod though.

ovrtake92 06-16-2009 07:15 AM

You got to wave! We are usually the big shiny jet at the airports we go to and we dont want to appear we are too cool when we taxi by a maule or a cirrus or something. A courtesy wave shows respect! And then we peel their paint off as we make the turn at the runup area :D

exerauflyboy5 06-16-2009 07:46 AM

Yep

I dont just wave............I start the wave

i like to wave! for some silly reason it makes me feel warm inside when i get a wave back. i think it's a simple but nice gesture, regardless of who you work for or what plane you fly. i could never understand the dudes that avert their gaze when walking through the terminal so they dont have to acknowledge you. seriously, what's up with that? i think phoenix is the most friendly airport i've ever been to. EVERY SINGLE airways pilot nods or smiles at you, and there are lots of them there! you just dont get that kind of friendliness in any of the east coast hubs. maybe it's something about the constant sunshine...

Uplifting thread. I've wondered who waves and who doesn't as well.

The regional guys usually wave to us Cessna and Piper drivers quite a bit. I like to wave at them, too. I think part of it is to get the pax, to see if they wave back. :D The corporate guys are so-so with waving.

I only wave at other GA pilots on occasion. I should probably be better about that. :o

Now as far as the technique of waving? A whole exposed palm, or just raise an index finger in the air? Maybe a surfer move with only pinky finger and thumb extended? A thumbs up? Decisions, decisions.

usually one of these will do...

fallujahff 06-17-2009 12:16 AM

I wave at everybody because I am so dang happy to be flying! Open hand, full of glee--!

Hell I even wave at the RJ's as they pass 500' above me on the airways--one even waved back (Thanks Bluestreak!).

FlyBoyd 06-17-2009 06:56 AM

A wave like this is common in these parts:)

I wave, open hand, it's the only one not used as a gang symbol.

And it's easier for the little kids to see. Some of them just light up when a REAL PILOT waves back to them or waves first, and the parent points out to the kid who is waving to them.

When I am not about to grab the controls to save life and property, I'll wave, full arm open hand, at the controllers too. A corporate pilot started me on that one and it always seems to be a hit with the controllers.

I will wave at ops, the fire guys, the airport police, and the EMTs. Those guys are the ones that'll be scraping my butt off from the runway should things go wrong, I want them to be motivated to doing so.

Ewfflyer 06-17-2009 08:57 AM

I'll wave when someone looks my way, we're crossing, etc..

Same as the "biker-wave." Although I never understood it completely. I do sometimes, other times when they are across a 4-8 lane interstate, I just laugh. Are these guys just looking for people to associate with? Some "hardcore" types won't wave at me when I'm on my sportbike(geared up) or even on my cruiser because I wear full-face helmet, ballistic(nylon) jacket, and gloves 99%+ of the time

250 or point 65 06-17-2009 05:37 PM

I got two points on this...

1) Anyone ever notice that if you're in the cockpit that initiates the wave and the other cockpit just stares or doesn't even see, the series is followed up by "A-hole"

2) I've only really noticed this at ORD, but I think it has something to do with the inbound and outbound ground freqs. Anytime there is another airplane converging with yours on the ground, opposite directions, or converging at intersecting taxiways or just taxing somewhere in general, the captain always sees them and says almost verbatim, "Aw, whats this a-hole doin'?"

Man Rule # 19

The head nod is an acceptable way to greet another guy when simply walking past. No words are needed to be said. An upward nod is for friends, a downward nod is for fellow men.

My understanding is that it means "keep the wheels down and keep your head up". Bikers have a special imperative to watch out for their safety. It is a downward open-handed wave, not the upward wave a pilot or firefighter does. It has nothing to do with bike, age, sex, or any other classification other than being a biker. I quit riding sport bikes because I realized it would eventually impact my flying career, but I remember getting those waves all the time.

HercDriver130 06-18-2009 04:46 AM

almost always wave
