I HATE FED's!!!
I had a simple question on a reg. Part 61.31 where it says "Or a device resembling a pressurized aircraft" or something like that. I called the San Antonio FSDO and got one answer then was called back later with another answer. So I called the Houston one and got yet another answer. And then Dallas for an "I don't know... Probably not".
I asked what is required for the high altitude.
One said you HAVE TO FLY IN THE AIRCRAFT OR SIM. I said what about that last part. if it isn't an aircraft and isn't a sim?".... "I don't know"
Then another said "it can be anything from an airplane sitting on the ground to a cardboard setup with no moving dials just to give you the mental picture."
One said just use a poster.
So if I trained a guy to get his High altitude endorsement by using a poster or what have you. Didn't actually do it in a sim or aircraft. And he got ramp checked and asked and that fed thought otherwise. What would you do? There are a lot of guys that fly right seat but can't ever log it. Before I got mine I flew in a merlin next to the boss all the time and could never log it. So some people could benifit from these things.

This is the time where you ask whichever fsdo guy that you happen to talk to, "Are you the real FAA or is the Houston guy the real FAA?" Personally, whenever I've been ramp checked, I've never been asked to see my endorsements. I don't carry my logbook when I fly, so even if they wanted to see them, they wouldn't be able to. Even if they did see the endorsement, that would probably be the end of it. I can't imagine that they would continue on trying to figure out how you got the endorsement unless you had an accident or incident involving knowledge you should have gained from the endorsement process. Long story short: Get the endorsement and don't worry about it.
