When I was in 8th grade I was building model airplanes with my grandfather and endangering life and limb to climb on top of buildings to recover my model rockets that went astray. :)

From my own experience, from the experience of my kids, and from teaching in the public school system, I would have to agree with you.

Many states have drastically cut back their science programs because the state testing is geared towards math and reading. There is little incentive to produce an outstanding science program because it is not emphasized by the state legislature.
