Amusing article. Doesn't explain though why planes are referred to in the feminine. I guess it was just a habit lifted from the sailors.

I think the Russians still call their ship names with Masculine reference...I call mine "dude" when all is well...And when "she" doesn't do what I expect, all sorts of nasty women references come from my mouth!...He he

Because they are ships and ships are refered to that way.

I think that ships are feminine because it used to be that all Captains were men ( and MANLY men at that) and not the types to be stroking or fondling another masculine entity. And dont forget that they were in command over the ship, the same way they were in command of their women.
