Locking political threads
 

Maybe nobody has noticed, but everything about this career has become political. Ending a thread because it was too political is just stupid. Also, for those who jumped to conclusions about the PSA guy who sold the body cleansing stuff, shame on you. Your naivete is ridiculous. It's cool though, go on trusting the government for everything. Hell, I'm sure the RLA is a good thing too...

I've been as guilty as most, as far as getting too political goes, but I think the mods do a pretty good job with this site. It's a slippery slope when you start allowing more and more sensitive "non-aviation"-related discussions on the forum.

Allegedly sold body cleansing stuff. Shame on you!

Getting in to political talk is against the TOS.

The job of the mod is to make sure that no one is violating these terms. Some threads go on longer than others as the political back and forth is not right out there, more implied. When it crosses a line, well you know.

We try not to lock or close threads. We prefer to delete a post of two, send a reminder and an occasional infraction. It just depends. This site tries to stay away for political banter, good or bad it is the way the site is run. If you want to talk about an issue that is political, discuss the merits of the issue, not red v blue.

Is there a reason not to open a Forum here to actually discuss political issues effecting our business. That way if someone didn't want to read it they could simply not open that forum?

Agreed. Aviation is a political issue and will continue to be. Left vs Right, Red vs Blue, and Labor vs anti Labor all deal with issues that affect our profession. I mean come on, our jobs and certificates are issued and goverened by the federal government.

When discussing issues such as FTDT regs you can not ignore and tip around the 800 pound gorilla which is the government and views held by those in government.

Political discussions are futile - regardless of their impact on our industry. They rarely, if ever, stay relative to industry discussions. Not to mention that when it comes to politics and religion, not many people are changing other's minds and others aren't changing your mind.

I have to agree with what acl65pilot said above. The thread was closed due to a violation of the site's TOS:

I will bring it up to the admins. I have always thought that idea had merit but it would involve changing the TOS. Now that the site is under different hands that may take a little more than you think. I will talk among the mods and see what they think.

Still I am going to report your post so we can use it as a spring board for the discussion.

For everybody who wants a forum or thread to discuss aviation and politics, or perhaps just politics, why don't you just invest your own money, time, and energy and start your own aviation/political forum?

How about calling it: www.airlinepilotpoliticalforums.com? It is an available domain.

That is a great thing about capitalism. If you truly think it is such a great idea, put your money where your political thoughts are and see how well your business idea pans out.

Something tells me it will devolve very, very quickly into a morass of name calling and child-like behavior, by a group of men and women who call themselves professionals. Advertisers will not advertise because of very low site usage by web users. And you will be supporting your web hosting service fees from your paycheck while all your free users gripe and moan about one political idea or another.

But, hey, what do I know. :rolleyes:
