TSA Agent beatdown in the parking lot

Mods, please let this live on the majors board. After all, DC9 pilots claim every other mainline pilot suffers from the same problem that made this Miami TSA Agent resort to a beat down on his Supervisor.

... and it's just too good a story for anywhere else :)

One worker is now in jail after assaulting a co-worker who teased him about his small genitalia

Rolando Negrin, 44, had a pretty good life including a steady job with the Transportation Security Administration. However, when he stepped into a full body scanner during a training session and it revealed him to have rather small genitalia, he quickly became the butt of his supervisor's jokes.

Filled with rage at the insults to his manhood, Negrin confronted his boss in the airport parking lot, armed with a police baton. He struck the man on the arm and back. A police report describes, "[Negrin] then told victim to kneel down and say 'your sorry'. Victim stated he was in fear and complied with [Negrin]."

Surprisingly, Negrin made no attempt to flee following the attack. He showed up at work the next day, acting as if nothing had happened. He was promptly arrested. He was booked into the Miami-Dade jail. He was wearing his blue TSA shirt at the time of his arrest.

The incident raises serious questions about the full body scanners that the Obama administrationis looking to spend millions of dollars in taxpayer money to roll out at airports across the country.

Homeland Security and TSA officials, as well as the scanner manufacturers have previously claimed that the scanners blur private parts. The incident clearly indicates that if these capabilities are present, they aren't on in at least some of the scanners -- a serious privacy concern.

Beyond the privacy concerns, there's also concern over the efficacy of the new scanners. British experts say that the scanners are virtually useless at detecting low density substances like chemical powders or liquids, and would be unlikely to detect plastic weapons.

Despite these concerns the U.S. and British governments are charging ahead with plans to roll out the controversial devices. It looks likely that the U.S. may soon implement a no-scan-no-fly policy, much like Britain.

If this is for real, I am waaaay less concerned with the travelling public's "rights" than I am of a supposed security professional acting out like a 5th grader. The article focuses on the civil liberties aspect (which is BS) and quickly disregards the TSA agent's lack of ability to act like a grownup and go through the proper channels. If the harassment was as bad as he says it was, it should have been handled through the workplace chain of authority, not a schoolyard "beatdown." They were both wrong.

Is anyone else getting tired of worrying about the public's "rights"??? We need to grow some stones and stop being so apologetic for everything we do. We are handicapping (oops, don't want to offend anyone ), I mean limiting our ability to protect ourselves with all this politically correct "I have rights" bull$hit. I am a male between 18 and 45 with dark features. I would welcome an environment that profiles everyone in my demographic, because you know what?? It's always this demographic that's causing the problems! If they need to scan my unit to be sure I'm not wearing explosive genitalia jewelry, then so be it. That is a right that should be forfeited if you want safe transportation from A to B. If you don't like it, drive.

Sorry for the rant, but this $hit really grinds my gears (just watched Family Guy :p)

I'll take a little less security and a little more liberty.

Sounds like the "Training sessions" need to be supervised a little better.

And really, who says "Say your sorry"?

I would reply "My sorry? I don't have a sorry"

Other than that, sounds like a good little press release from the ACLU clowns that think it should be OK for a guy to smuggle a sheep into a Garth Brooks concert.

Let me know how that works out for you when the next bomb plot by a Yemeni, Pakastani, British, or Nigerian terrorist isn't thwarted. Just a matter of time my friend. If red-headed Irish women start leaving bombs in Times Square and trying to light their shoes on fire, then we'll add them to the list, until then I think you get my drift.

I don't see how anyone could disagree with this after the constant flow of terrorists and would-be terrorists over the last several decades.

"They" are out to get us, and we're affording them rights and protections to make their effort a little easier.

Totally agree. It is what it is, you don't like it, tough.

+1.

A little more guts would go a long way to ending terrorism. At the rate we are going it will soon be the "Land of the cowards" with a flag of red, white and yellow.

On 7/21/2005 terrorists launched a failed attack on the London Subway. It did not fail because the bombs did not go off--they did. It failed because on 7/22/2005 the citizens of London did they same thing that they did to defeat Hitler and the IRA; they went on with life. They simply sucked it up, went into the subways and went to work.

And there has not been another attack on the subways.

Don't get your drift when 99.9% of all terrorist attacks and planned attacks are from middle eastern, Persian or South Asian Muslims.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin

The only place these scanners are appropriate are at ports of entry and our borders.

That is exactly my drift. We need to be focusing on that 99.9%. Make no apologies. Every time we say "we will never do x" that creates a mile wide loophole for these guys to drive through. Quite frankly I'm surprised that it hasn't happened again yet.

I think we're all on the same page here. I just happen to be for a little more common sense approach of singling out the "profile" of who we're dealing with here. Right now our security, crews, and passengers are hamstrung by the threat of litigation if we even suggest a middle eastern gentleman is up to something and attempt to look into it further. They are able to hide behind the shield of our political correctness and they know this.

I agree that there is no such thing as 100% security, but I don't believe we need to let them blow us up to show how tough we are. El Al and the Israeli's play OFFENSE with their security and make no apologies with their enemies. If a few innocent people get inconvenienced with security, fine. At some point you have to say enough. However, if you say we will not do body scans, or personal checks, where do you think they'll hide the components of their next terror device??? This is pretty simple.

If the security agent, Captain, or flight attendants don't like the way you look, or have a funny feeling, that should be all the reason necessary to take it to the highest level. We shouldn't be looking over our shoulders for the civil liberties attorneys when we are making a judgement call. Our priorities are out of whack and we're going to get spanked again if we're not careful.
