North America heads the league in terms of the number of pilots it will need in the next two decades, at 112,000
Wow! About 5500 per year! At that rate we could run out of furloughees in only 2-3 years! |
Does anyone know how many commercial licenses are issued in the US each year? I know that statistics can be skewed and misread either way but surely we are producing the 5500 or so needed each year for the next 20 years once you factor in furloughs and new grads?

New commercial Pilots
Even now the US produces an average of 8,000 to 10,000 new commercial pilots every year. Most of those new pilots never get very far in their careers. As a result we have a huge backlog of pilots on the sidelines who are ready to jump back in once things improve.
Demand for 5500 new pilots a year is a drop in the bucket. Our efficient system of cranking out new pilots by the boatload will easily supply the need. Skyhigh |
Im still under the belief that there is a big enough chunk of international students getting their ratings here and having no intention whatsoever of flying in the States professionally.
Couple that with people who are out of the game for good and fewer students looking for an aviation career (both economical driven factor)...I wouldnt be shocked that in about 5 years there may be an issue with pilot supply. |

Haah I love how the ad on the top of this thread is for the almighty Kit Darby: "Airline Pilot Career Expert". Oh the irony...
